    Heavy Bogies

I think there are 4 arrangements 1. armature wound direct onto the axle. This was used in early electrification but isn't used now, I think. See Central London Railway locos. 2. Axle hung. One side of the motor is attached to the axle and the other to the bogie. So half the weight is unsprung...

ECML - which side has the best views?

Near Thirsk you will see the white horse of kilburn. Again east side. West side you can see the Dales which are nicer than Nothing York Moors (I am biased!) East side again but the glimpse of Alnmouth is worth a look. Before you get to Alnmouth Station.

Trivia: Common excuses for not electrifying lines

And as I said above, concreting over large tracts oF the country has made flooding worse. Instead of the water soaking into the ground like a sponge, it runs off the buildings and paves surfaces straight into storm drains and into water courses. So you get a big flood pulse. If we want more...

Leeds - Lancaster - Morecambe cut back to skipton.

Was on Skipton stn yesterday and saw a train from Morecambe terminate. Looked at real time trains this morning and they are all cut back to Skipton. But the timetables on the Northern site have the full Leeds-Morecambe service. What's going on? And for how long? Long old walk from platform 3 to...

    The Midnight Train...?

There is no 12 am or 12 pm. They are 12 noon or 12 midnight. You can't be before or after meridian when you are at meridian. (Meridian =noon) So at lunchtime it goes 11:59 am 12:00 noon 12:01 pm In fact 12:00:01 is pm

Trivia: Common excuses for not electrifying lines

A lot of flooding is caused by man changing the drainage. By tree clearance, land drainage, River 'improvement' and development. But the fact remains we have had floods for ever. Go to river gate in Worcester and look at the flood height markers placed in the wall. The highest is 1600's...

Been for run out up north today. Starting at Skipton, where I caught a train to Bradford. Time for a brew in a cafe then the Keighley Bus Company 67 to Keighley via Denholme. At Keighley a quick change onto the Burnley Bus Company M4. It goes to Burnley but I got off at Colne. 2 high...

    Historic station name changes

Local authority funding. The name reflects the funding, not the location.

    Heavy Bogies

Sorry. Not level crossing, this type of crossing (circled).

    Heavy Bogies

Dont bogies have to be heavy to cope with the dynamic loadings over bumps in the track. The worst is over crossings. Fix that and you could reduce bogie mass Of course on the Cl 91 they got the motors and brakes out of the bogies and into the body, so fully sprung. less mass in the bogie...

Trivia: Common excuses for not electrifying lines

Yes. Importing steel made abroad rather than making it at home really makes a difference </sarc>

Are high numbered bus numbers offputting to potential passengers?

I grew up in W Yorks. Before 1974 the bus companies had their own route numbering systems so were usually under 100. But their buses were different colours. So, for example, in Leeds, the 44 from Halton Moor to Stanningley was green(1), while the 44 leeds - Bridlington was red or blue(2)...

Trivia: Common excuses for not electrifying lines

TBH I think a far bigger problem is plastic in the environment. There are particles of it in soils, and in the sea. And it takes centuries to biodegrade.
