Are there still any roadside ticket machines for buses in London?

Why can't they sell bus maps as well? Any other capital city would. Before anyone makes the point, I'm only too aware that TfL refuse to produce them now, but a public-spirited person does, not-for-profit.

    Bus stations being rebuilt

Yes, they can be, but Plymouth Bretonside had a certain combination of features and surroundings making it a paradise for people who had no intention of ever catching a bus or coach, though buses had almost vanished well before it closed. Plymouth City Council had provided a bus inspector during...

    Bus stations being rebuilt

Dangerous too, as I discovered in its dank, dark and stinking environs when I returned to a left luggage locker there after a late night pre Christmas shopping trip about 25 years ago. If I hadn't been fleet of foot I'd have been robbed, knifed or both, and I never returned there, even though a...

Bus routes between major towns and other

The best of luck with this project, potentially never-ending imo. Got to take issue with Lands End to Penzance, though, or Lands End to anywhere. Lands End is in no way a town, and neither is Sennen, the nearest settlement. Helston to Penzance, Falmouth, Redruth and Truro can be added to the...

Most exotic licence plate personally spotted on UK road

There's been a VW I've seen every year for yonks in Penzance with a Guernsey five number registration.

In my part of the country for about a year now, Private Eye isn't even on sale in the shop (WHS) and supermarkets that stock it until the Thursday. It's meant that a couple of times when I've been indisposed and asked somebody to buy it for me I've received a second, unwanted copy of the previous...

    Aldwych Station Information

My grandfather worked for the Inland Revenue at Somerset House from before the First World War until the 1950s and told my father that his employers had successfully permanently thwarted any plans to tunnel beyond Aldwych. As he was a reticent and very discreet man I have no doubt it was true...

I agree with all of that. I'm beginning to wonder what all the fuss about Atkinson was, though. Got a feeling if he played for Northants or Kent he'd never have been chosen for the squad. Similarly with Hants's John Turner being massively overhyped as the 'new McGrath'. It cannot help the lad.

That sounds a bit Dad's Army. The Bosch manage to invade but are thwarted by altered road signs etc! ;)

Oh, wow. :D :D Her constituency people will now get it in the neck for not checking the credentials of these pranksters, but who cares? An A1 spoof, viral isn't in it.

3rd T20 won by England by 6 wickets, with a ball to spare. England almost failed again by sending in Livingstone ahead of Brook, but luckily the former got out in time for Brook's late heroics to save the day.

    London Buses Discussion

Your first and second sentences are a tautology. The third one merely confirms that it is in public ownership, funded by London ratepayers. It's not the Mayor's personal fiefdom, even though a previous one acted like it was. Resorting to pedantry doesn't provide an answer to my central point...

Shortest UK car number plate you've seen

I several times saw car reg. A20 when I used that road daily in the early 1980s, also SE9 in the town of Eltham bearing that London postcode. The lowest number I ever remember seeing was A6, perhaps fifty years ago now.

I received today a monthly tram magazine I've subscribed to for the last twenty years, which has never arrived more than a week late: the same applies to a London bus magazine over a much longer period. Maybe I get a better service than many, perhaps aided by being in the centre of a town about...

    London Buses Discussion

Unlike any other bus operator in Great Britain, TfL is in public ownership, directly answerable to an elected Mayor and, beyond that, to the London Assembly of other elected members. When the decision was made to create the Superloop network, regardless of where the idea sprung from and if the...

Why did Woakes come in before Ahmed? The latter might well have won it for England - it's obvious to me he's already a far better batter, not to mention bowler, abroad.

Live up to their name rather than hide behind 'contract' b/s. Palmers Green garage, which operates this route, couldn't be better placed to ensure that both ends of it get some sort of service even in worse than usual traffic conditions. Croydon garage, on the other hand, is less well-placed to...
