(Trivia) Examples of splits and joins

Should reducing or lengthening the train for capacity reasons at a mid point really be considered the same as splitting/joining in the sense of the original question? It’s not quite the same in terms of journey planning or timetabling.

Great Northern Fleet - 379s introduction

That would just cause yet more duplication. There already is a live thread for the 387 to SN and 377 to SE, it’s in speculation though. Mod Post #1174 linked to it, I suppose to shift the 387 and 377 guesswork to a more appropriate place.

    That Massive Wall at Carlisle?

NLS old maps suggest a much greater coverage of the overall roof, hope this side by side view works: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.5&lat=54.89028&lon=-2.93251&layers=168&right=ESRIWorld There’s also a previous thread from 2014, a contributor there reckoned it was removed...

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

The public online sectional appendix for the last section, LN702 (still named Bedlington to Lynemouth “Alcan”) has a first entry of 0m 04ch at Bedlington North LC. Does that suggest a zero point at the platform? Then Ashington Junction (I think that’s the new crossover) is at 2m 62ch, and...

Avanti Class 221s to Cross Country

You’re right of course, but I guess many people will probably continue to post on the assumption that a lack of rolling stock is the only problem to solve.

    Newbiggin railway station

It’s an unsignalled industrial siding from a relatively short distance beyond the current station. Will require full resignalling, perhaps some doubling if the passenger and freight services to Lynemouth need to completely avoid each other, additional S&C at Ashington to form a down loop...

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

It had been mentioned in this thread a week or so back, having appeared on X/Twitter, but I think the relevant posts have been moved to the new thread in the fares forum.

Some questions about historic and terminated routes

Yes, now I remember we had a thread a few years ago about historic BR, NSE, and early SWT timetables, and that had mentioned the specific services terminating at Wareham kept changing. I was thinking about the situation at or around the 2004 changes, at that time I think the 05/09/35/39 pattern...

Some questions about historic and terminated routes

    1. I don’t remember it happening as it’s out of my area, but it was by late 2003 - when a number of other SRA inspired franchise specification changes occurred. 2. The route section between Cosham and Brighton was transferred to Southern in about 2007, and they introduced an hourly Southampton...

Stuff growing out of walls - what is the definitive answer?

I think there should be more visibility of the problem and solution if RAIB actually investigated when there are real failures, such as on the Nine Elms Viaduct on the approach towards Waterloo. I’m sure streetview images of the ‘before’ condition of that stretch were fairly similar to the...

Avanti Class 221s to Cross Country

Only the initial 7 units were agreed by DfT to replace the HSTs, but they are now getting 12. But surely XC cannot fail to make visible capacity improvements with 12 units, given that they hardly ever used more than 2 or 3 HSTs, and their network is still smaller than it was a few years ago?

New direct rail service to link Edinburgh and Wales "for the first time"

That’s exactly how it was explained in the track access application, so you‘re right. I quoted the relevant paragraph in post #80 last month.

Northumberland Line fares (including impact on Tyne & Wear Metro maximum fares)

This has been covered at length in the infrastructure forum, and we’ve been assured by posts, from those who seem to know, that it is all being changed except for the Newcastle to Sunderland route.

Carmont inquiry to start in January

I knew that from the original thread. I was really only asking the general question; as an FAI takes place after criminal proceedings are completed, then like with an inquest does it get initially opened at the time of the incident and is it then adjourned until after the said criminal case?

Major termini/large through stations where entry/exit line speeds could be improved

You’re right, the first 6 are 10 x 20m platform lengths at Waterloo and couldn’t accept 12.450 or 10.444 if fast and slow were swapped, and they can’t be easily extended because the throat narrows and is on a tight curve. The flyover at Durnford Road would have to be completely rebuilt to work...

    Fraudulent Ticket

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

There was also a junction at Seaton Delaval, at the main road bridge just north of the station, it was mentioned in this thread back in 2022; post #499 and replies.

Class 801 running empty to Glasgow

Yes, it’s a standard route learning service, been in the current weekday timetable since June. May well have run in previous timetable periods, it’s not easy to check.

    December 2024 timetable change

I just checked their website and it isn’t on there yet. “All our trains have first class” is still the main takeaway, with 4 days left…
