    Station pubs (part two?)

You could have a "top N" of pubs called the Railway, and the Railway in Hebden Bridge would be Nth in the list

    General Knowledge Quiz

Not quite, but you’re close enough The answer is that nobody made a score in double figures: three batsmen (Rehan Ahmed, Lewis Hill and Peter Handscomb) made centuries, whilst the other eight got less than 10 each, with five ducks Leicestershire were 0/2, then 360/3, then lost their last seven...

No, but it is to do with the individual batsmen's scores

    Supermarkets discussion

Bulky items sold at or below cost as key promo lines were the bane of my life when I ran logistics for Makro. Partly because of the sheer volume of the stuff making getting the Makro Mail stock into stores on time difficult, and partly because when the Germans (Metro AG) owned Makro they main...

    Supermarkets discussion

A major issue for a lot of supermarkets nowadays is that because of the inexorable rise in the use of promotions as a marketing tool, an increasing proportion of what they sell are things where the customer didn't specifically go to the shop for that product, rather they went for some stuff...

    Caledonian Sleeper

It wasn't structured the same way back then though was it? I couldn't remember the timings so erred on the side of caution, but when I did the FW in the 1980s I think the shunting happened at Mossend

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

And once those workers were pensioners, they'd be in that position. What goes around comes around. I honestly think the simplest and most transparent system is easiest and cheapest to implement, and easiest to get people to understand and buy into

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

I just don't understand the relevance of earnings growth to pensions. All that needs to be done is to maintain buying power, it is nothing to do with income relative to those still in work

    Caledonian Sleeper

You'd also increase the overall length of the train, and as I understand that's a pretty tight constraint at Euston

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

The problem with that is that there isn't a cast iron guarantee of a one year lag, and more fundamentally why should pensions increase if prices haven't? If we were to suppose that the state pension was at an acceptable level in year one, why should pensioners get a real terms increase in year...

My partner's dad "celebrated" his 80th birthday by trying to get through the turnstiles at the Stadium of Light using his Covid pass

The cost of the welfare state - challenges posed and solutions

Yes, they're linked, but using the rate of increase as a fix for having got the level wrong in the first place is not the way to go about it
