Feasibility of Reopening the York to Whitby Direct Line.

I watched the complete video Sunday night, and to be honest any reopening seems to be me to firmly in 'not in the forseeable future' category Reinstatement south from the current station was pretty much discounted due to development. There is also the issue of crossing the A169, which was on...

Feasibility of Reopening the York to Whitby Direct Line.

I don't think it would work, Journey time wouldn't be great, and even if line speed were increased from the current 'heritage limit' it was only 35mph (I think) on most of the Pickering Grosmont section when it was BR. Pickering to Maflton would be quite a task, as south of Pickering Station has...

Most boring journeys between 2 Stations (Tunnels don’t count!!)

If you allow continental journeys I would nominate Charles de Gaulle Airport to Marne le Vallee Chessy, 10 minutes, train hardly reaches line speed, and view is boring. Could be shortest time wise TGV journey in France and 25E to boot.

WCR/RTC Railtour locomotives, fleet updates and movements

(1Z12) It was late leaving York, we saw it was still in the platform at about 11.55 when we arrived to catch the heavily delayed 12.11 to Scarborougn. There semed to be all sorts of problems between York and Leeds around Saturday lunchtime, as checking RTT just now it shows it leaving York 15...

New trains vs further developing existing designs

Maybe would only be a low speed mode to aid recovery rather than full MU operation?

New trains vs further developing existing designs

Maybe a common sense approach, A standard layout and operator interface which is only changed if technological advances require a change. Changes are then incremental, rather that each layout and design being the whim of a supplier. It would also cover things like navigating HMI screens, use of...

Traffic on the Wolds Coast line, 1920s - 1950s

It might be worth joining the Facebook Group 'The Hull to Scarborough line, past and present' https://www.facebook.com/groups/453813081355784/ as various historical snippetts get posted from time to time.

Are some rail companies trying to deter cyclist passengers?

Unfortunately my weight precludes a folding cycle. I did try one about 15 years ago, and it folded, while I was riding it. (I am around 20st, but have cycled all my life) I think the key here is subsidised. Just about every journey off the main inter city routes is subsidised to some level, so...

Are some rail companies trying to deter cyclist passengers?

I am a cyclist, and have taken my bike by train on the odd occasion. For anything other than the odd local journey the whole system is quite offputting Different ToCs have different rules, so trying to plan a journey involving multiple ToCs becomes a near impossibility How do Advance tickets...

Greens propose abolishing first class on ScotRail trains

I really dont get it, if someone is willing to pay more to have nicer travelling environment then why not. If 1st on some routes is badly underused then reduce or remove it on a route by route basis, but to me it feels like a case of envy and/or race to the bottom.

Ordsall chord Manchester Piccadilly to Victoria service inprovements

I would be surprised if NPR is up and running in any shape or form before 2050, and probably more like 2060, and thats if it is started at all. If I am here to witness it I will be well chuffed, as I will be about to get or already have a telegram from the reigning monarch!!!

Ordsall chord Manchester Piccadilly to Victoria service inprovements

And there is a considerable potential flow from Birchwood owing to the wide range of Engineering based businesses in the area, a lot of them involved with the UK civil nuclear industry. When I worked there two of my colleagues commuted from Stalybridge to Birchwood, which at this time was a no...

Ordsall chord Manchester Piccadilly to Victoria service inprovements

The problem is not just the Castlefield corridor, but where trains go at the eastern end, as you are then at the throat of Man Pic station, and the only destination that is easy is Manchester Airport. Unfortunately the Ordal Chord was built without sorting the surrounding problems out and until...

Northern Rail £1.50 Settle Carlisle line tickets

I have seen various adverts for the tickets to celebrate the 150 years of this route. Northern website mentions them, as do various press articles. But how do you book them? Tried putting in various combinations into the Northern app, but certainly nothing at this price, so anyone have any info...

Should there be a Solent tunnel?

There have been a number of proposals for a fixed link over the years with the 1901 scheme looking like the one that got closest to happening. Had this happened it would also have been a very early application of electic power on mainline railways. Obviously electric operation avoided the issues...

Trivia: Closed passenger lines that have now been reopened and electrified

I used the Olympia service from Clapham Junction for about 6 months during the 1977/8 period, I had a job in west London, not far from Sheperherd Bush, and Olympia was about 15 minutes walk. Although a sparse rush hour service, the train was far quicker than the alternatives, 49 bus or driving...

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

I know HS2 has been compared to Crossrail in terms of over spend and disasters, but Crossrail was pretty much delivered in full as planned, OK late and over budget. HS2 is not being delivered in full, if you take the original Y shaped route, way less than half of what was originally planned is...

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

Yes, there are few things I recognise from within my industry. Reliance on self employed workers, of which I am one, because in order to acheive a decent salary you have to be 'management'. technical excellence is not recognised, but then firms have to employ 'contractors' at similar rates to...

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

It shouldn't be, but experience generally, outside the rail industry is that even simple jobs seem to take an inordinate amount of time and as a result costs spiral. An example from locally, about 18 months ago the local council decided to construct a roundabout on a local unclassified road in...
