Railway staff lying to the BTP

Not sure, certainly not in terms of knowledge... with a ticketing system this complex I think it unrealistic that any member of staff will be as knowledgeable as a dedicated enthusiast such as RJ. I suppose how one reacts (for that is surely the issue) should be more of a training issue than...

The different assumptions of commuters and other travellers

Exactly this. Some of the indignation in this thread is as silly as the complaining passenger in the OP.

    NationalRail fares reliable?

Maybe because it involves a journey leg (Oxford-Reading) that isn't FGW

Friend wrongly had ticket taken from him

IIRC RJ suggested that you might have trouble with (errant) staff if trying to carry out (legitimate) multiple breaks of journey.

    NRE not working?

Say no more. Everyone, be ready for fingernails and hair to grow significantly before anything works.

Friend wrongly had ticket taken from him

I'd be prepared to bet that all this would be miles over the head of the member of gateline staff concerned and that they thought BoJ was not permitted (wrong) and that the appropriate action therefore was to withdraw the ticket (wrong), "letting the OP's friend off, this one time" or such...

Police Officer Sues After Tripping On Kerb

That means that you can make up any old sh*t you like. Arguably.

Murder arrests after man hit by train.

I used to live in Guildford. My guess would be Plat 3, with the train concerned being an outbound Waterloo slow originating at Guildford (or an ECS movement from a Waterloo slow inbound some time before).

Friend wrongly had ticket taken from him

Surely it doesn't matter even if your interpretation is correct... or at least it depends on exactly what was said between the passenger and staff member at the gateline. At the point of the ticket being retained there was simply a BoJ and nothing regarding resumption. Even if your...

Seat reservations to be scrapped entirely?

At the risk of scalding again... in practice there is very unlikely to be an issue in that scenario above, but technically you are breaking the terms of an Advance. Interestingly (?) I think this is to do with the specific T&Cs of Advances rather than specific provisions in the NRCoC or anywhere...

    No sh*t, Sherlock :D

    Norway (Northern lights)

One thing about price... if you book in advance you can get very cheap fares. I live south of Oslo - about as far away from Bodø as you can get in Norway - and can book a trip to Bodø (1300km, 20 hours) in June for 249 kr (£28) one way. You can book advances ("Minipris") about 3 months in advance.

Seat reservations to be scrapped entirely?

Why is this hard? Normal practice sometimes <> the rules. As with so many other things on the railways, expecting normal service that is strictly outside the rules, and/or taking it for granted, is lining yourself up for a shock every now and again.

Amount of cash raised by TOC's in fines and UPN's etc

I think you mean "some posters will give Citizen Smithery the faint ridicule it deserves".

Amount of cash raised by TOC's in fines and UPN's etc

You are saying - not implying - that "people only pay because they have to" (trivially true) and "people avoid paying if they can" are one and the same. It's hooey.
  16. J

Amount of cash raised by TOC's in fines and UPN's etc

This line of thinking - both paragraphs - implies no responsibility on the part of the passenger whatsoever and that, in some way, is the heart of the problem.
  17. J

Amount of cash raised by TOC's in fines and UPN's etc

So, after all those words, you're ultimately suggesting that "they" should go and catch some real criminals. Righto.

    Unsigned Railcards

This, although the general lack of curiosity and awareness on the part of the punter with regard to things like this surprises me. It's one of a myriad of factors that lead me to believe that perhaps 90% of people driving a car shouldn't be allowed to do so.

Amount of cash raised by TOC's in fines and UPN's etc

If the "offences" here were one-offs I'd probably agree about the disproportionality argument. But I'd bet that in many if most cases they aren't (no matter what the squealings of those caught suggest).

Amount of cash raised by TOC's in fines and UPN's etc

I'm sure that those who pay their fare are delighted by the balance provided by the fare dodgers.
