GWR Cornish Night Riviera Sleeper and GWR Class 57 updates from Long Rock

But the empty stock is propelled into Penzance, isn't it? Do you mean they don't like guards doing it with passengers on board? Or is the empty stock in Penzance propelled by someone other than a guard?

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

I provided a technical explanation of how a device is informed to check for alerts in post #62: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/uk-emergency-alert-tests-2025.291684/post-7454792 Essentially, if your phone is connected to the mobile network it will be told to perform a scan for alert...

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

It cannot receive an alert via WiFi. The coffee machine probably uses a common Android device as a base, which has a cellular modem. Even if it's not connected to a network and has no SIM card, it can still receive the alert.

    PlusBus Tickets

A successful use of PlusBus CCST this morning on Stagecoach South. Undercuts the Guildford Park & Ride return ticket! And Shalford station is only 3 minutes away for an easy ticket printing experience.

    Avanti

As has been pointed out, only the Pendolinos (tilting trains) run up to Scotland for Avanti at the moment. Maybe you could try Transpennine Express, who operate between Edinburgh/Glasgow and Manchester? No idea where you're going, but you'd then have connections to a lot of the country from there.

    Special Offers Discussion

I have just bought a ToD ticket, and immediately refunded it without collecting it. So it is the case.

Refund Super Off Peak Day Return West Hampstead to Brighton.

This seems like an issue you should contact Avanti's customer support about. You are due a refund of £8.05.

    National Routeing Guide update

This easement has no effect as circuitous route easements can only be negative, yet this has been set up as a positive easement.

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

I'm very sorry for this long reply. The two basic information blocks (Master Information Block - MIB, and SIB1) have a fixed transmit interval defined by the LTE spec. And data transmission for LTE can be broken down into radio frames of length 10ms, with 1ms subframes within each radio frame...

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

A device doesn't need to be connected to the base station to receive the alert. It just needs to observe the base station's broadcast messages. A device with receive-only capabilities would even be able to show it, if one existed (or if someone managed to break the Tx path of the radio). The...

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

For those who don't know, the nature of Cell Broadcast means that there is no information held about how many devices have received an alert. It is quite literally impossible to know how many devices have received an alert. It is broadcasted like TV or radio in the sense that your phone doesn't...

    Resilience of Ticketing system

For portable ones, I don't think it is really. The circular ones you see on things like vending machines and self-service car washes all use mobile data, and so do a lot of food places (not just the food stands mentioned above!), and so will some on-board catering providers in the UK (though...

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

We don't use presidential alerts, but that doesn't magically mean you can disable them. They still exist. If a UK mobile network happened to transmit one, everyone would receive it. The point is whether the system is physically capable of sending an alert of this type. My honest guess is that...

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

In all official and Google-certified Android builds, the highest level of CMAS alert (called "Presidential", after its initial introduction in the USA) is force-enabled. It cannot be disabled by an end-user whatsoever. The Android source code highlights this: // note that mPresidentialCheckBox...

Rather impressive to have never stayed at a family member's home, friend's home, or a hotel!

    UK Emergency Alert Tests 2025

There's another level of alert which will always bypass the operating system settings. The UK hasn't used this alert, and evidently does not plan to, but it's unknown whether the functionality exists in the system that was developed by central government and the mobile network operators. Very...

    PlusBus Tickets

When setting up a Google Wallet pass, developers can set flags to tell the app to disable NFC automatically. I've made sure to set that up for tickets bought through TrainSplit/Raileasy/the forum, but evidently other retailers are not as customer experience focused!

    Railsmartr pricing

Railsmartr isn't seeing the through advance singles as valid for some reason, or perhaps they aren't actually seeing any availability returned by the reservations system. Why that might be is a mystery which only the people who run the site will know, I guess!
