Stopped whilst accidentally using my mum's Disable Freedom pass

Sometimes the forum software will ask for moderator approval before a post is displayed. This sometimes happens if the software thinks it might be spam or if a post has been edited. While it can be frustrating someone from the moderating team will get it approved asap.

Stopped whilst accidentally using my mum's Disable Freedom pass

TfL are saying they will not withdraw the summons, although it’s really not acceptable for them to say that you should have contacted them before they wrote to you. That said, it is very unusual for TfL to do anything other than prosecute this sort of case. Given where things are, and the...

Abolishing peak and off peak fares?

TfL did just that across London for several months last year. Passenger numbers didn't improve and revenue went down.

Could new report from Transport Focus Help 1st time offences *which were unintentional*

People who think payment is optional - no change to current arrangements. If they're refusing to buy a ticket it doesn't matter what ticketing purchasing facilities exist but what we're talking about here isn't ticketless travel but how to prevent people being criminalised for making 'honest...

    Birmingham International Station - Parking

In my experience, you should be fine on a Saturday.

Trivia: Instances where it is faster to walk from station to station when to get the tube

Farringdon to Chancery Lane is a classic one that's faster to walk. Looks a long way on the tube map.

    Intercity trains to Blackfriars (London)

Sounds great in theory but just imagine the dwell time needed for passengers to board and alight at Farringdon, with luggage etc. It would ruin the timetable and that's before other operational reasons are mentioned.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

I don't want to take this thread off-topic with a discussion about fares, but I've been warning about massive fares increases for leisure travel as a result of Project Oval for years. Here's are some links to a couple of posts I wrote a few years ago demonstrating the issue...

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

I fear the weekend super off peak tickets will get removed which will mean a 50% increase in fares to travel from Stevenage to London and back at the weekend. To be fair super-off peak tickets are still available from Welwyn Garden City which has had contactless for some time, but not as part...

GB Rail Sale has highlighted how unaffordable many fares are

I disagree that all rail fares are too expensive. Many rail fares are extortionately priced, an example being London to Manchester Anytime Return at £369.60 On the other hand there are some excellent value fares, the GTR priced weekend super off-peak tickets being a good example.

    Potential Prosecution

As long as you gace the ticket inspector you correct address there is nothing to be gained by contacting GTR.

Could new report from Transport Focus Help 1st time offences *which were unintentional*

My view is tickets should not be sold on board, this is what causes confusion. There should be a ticket vending machine at every station, if necessary card only and promise to pay for those who want to pay in cash.

Notice of Intention to Prosecute not received

As long as you gave the ticket inspector your correct contact details then I would not be contacting GWR about this. It is for them to contact you. Once they do contact you GWR will probably offer you an out of court settlement, as long as you co-operate with them. They will want...

Abolishing peak and off peak fares?

I've no idea, but regardless of whether it's an expense account or not these fares do get sold. How would you reform the fares, and cruically how would you do it without increasing the Off Peak fare significantly?

TfL caught me but no details taken

Agreed, it seems you have been very lucky. Another thing to be aware of is your card has failed one revenue inspection. If further inspections are failed then your card is bloicked from being used on the TfL network.

The train fares increasing in March instead of January in the last few years.

From a PR point of view an increase in January doesn't work. It's normally slow-news around Christmas and New Year with journalists looking for easy stories to write - rail fares increases being an obvious candidate. You get all the bad publicity on 2nd January then they have another go a few...

Abolishing peak and off peak fares?

Let's look at some examples. Take Stevenage to London, current fares: Anytime Day Return £26.70 Off Peak Day Return £21.80 Weekend Day Return £14.60 What would the fare be under your system? How would you ensure that trains at the busiest times of the day have sufficient capacity to cope...

Notice of intended prosecution Chiltern Railways

I think something along these lines will be fine. Purchasing tickets is not an offence but using them illegally is. It is highly unlikely that Chiltern have any proof that the tickets were used illegally if your son was not stopped. Clearly the incident where he was stopped has been dealt...

Notice of intended prosecution Chiltern Railways

Thanks for confirming. What often happens is that once someone has come to the attention of a train company they often research their online ticket purchasing history looking for further irregularities. They then contact the person essentially to seek further reimbursement.

    SWR barriers refusing ticket today

My local GTR station routinely blocks railcard discounted tickets and Advance tickets so they can be manually checked. Unless I'm travelling with an undiscounted Anytie ticket I don't even bother trying the barriers these days. The reality is, there are so many tickets so inspect staff cannot...
