It was common elsewhere: the layout at Brockenhurst and Wareham was set up that way, as was Elmers End originally. At Barnstaple and Okehampton only an Up Main platform was available but the process was the same.
Aberdare is interesting: it's similar to Penryn in having both platforms on one...
The Ely-Sheffield and vv were replacements for the (North Country) Continental.
I was in Cambridge in summer 82 and used it to take my new fiancee to see old friends in Worksop. (We came back ECML and the relationship has survived.) The unit had taken us from Cambridge half-an-hour earlier...
Paris-Nice (couchette) is an option, or Munich- Milan (also rather a detour from Paris. From UK I'd do Brussels/Paris-Munich (much subject to engineering works) or Amsterdam-Innsbruck/Zurich.
But with a 6hr daytime journey P-M is borderline for a night train.
In answer to your last question - if you cooperate fully from now on you will almost certainly be offered a settlement. However you must expect to pay the full fare for all the times you have cheated, plus an admin fee which could well be over £100.

Similarly for commuter and flexible business...
But neither delay repay nor a refund is compensation for uncertainty and inconvenience.
For this, I would be asking for a goodwill gesture or similar for the poor information which caused it - and the tube fare from VIC to CHX as well as the taxi fare.
Said link says 60mph - previously the DEMUs had a maximum speed of 75, though as the journey times in 1963 and 1982 (online) were pretty much identical I doubt they actually exceeded 60 by much.
Removing the Ladywell Loop (especially the down one) would make the civils' life much easier as the geometry is awful (to the naked eye) and it's 20mph. Removing the junction with the Courthill Loop would bring much less advantage.
