    Railway periodica 1970s?

I would recommend Modern Railways as the one to look for - it was semi-professional (advertised itself as the one the professionals read). Railway World aimed more at the heritage side of things. Railway Magazine has always aimed at being the 'standard' magazine for the enthusiast to read, but...

What type of camera should I buy for trainspotting??

If you are signed up/accepted for such a course, I would ask the college for their recommendation(s) as to what they require/expect/suggest you have for it. Look a this as a photography, not a railway, project. Take a look at Amateur Photographer - a quick glimpse at their website showed they...

Inadequate Metrolink ticketing facilities at Manchester Victoria

Those sort of things are when the rot started (if I can put it that way) - I'm thinking further back, when you were (almost certainly) paying a conductor, not the driver, and, certainly up to point, change would be given. And with a few shillings in assorted change, you probably did have the...

Inadequate Metrolink ticketing facilities at Manchester Victoria

No, it's not satire. Contactless may make it easy - but can I use it, and if so how? If I come out of the station to catch a tram, what do I need to do pay the correct fare? Is it the same as the last time I did so (at a different station, on a different system)? As I said, in byegone days...

Inadequate Metrolink ticketing facilities at Manchester Victoria

Whatever the merits of TfGM's contactless system, the big problem (if you don't) is knowing that it exists, and when/where and how to use it... A (very) quick look at TfGM's website didn't strike that working out how to use (and pay for) their services was exactly simple. Although to be fair...

    Highest minimum number of changes?

When I encountered this qustion a good few years ago, for a British Rail ONLY journey (no Underground - and I think no walking between stations either) the answer was I think 7: from any station on the Southminster branch, to a particular station (Swale?) on the Sheerness branch, which did not...

Do all stations with 3 letters only in the name have identical CRS code?

Perhaps the question to ask is - if this happened, would the code for Hagley be changed, or would 'Hag' be given a non matching CRS code? Which would cause more hassle? Has anything been laid down as to what the answer will be? What is the reason for Lee and Rye (quoted above) having bracketed...

Southern rail letting you book for Christmas day!!!!

To clarify, "Nice people to do business with" was seen on some company's advert, as a claim they made of themselves, as a reason to do business with them. Something I would hope all businesses should be able claim. And my comment as to the railway not being able to is a reflection of not just...

Southern rail letting you book for Christmas day!!!!

The clause quoted only refers to where information about the range of tickets may be found... Is there anything in them dealing with this case (a ticket being sold for day/train for which there is no intention of providing service/running it? But the issue is (1) that you are not met by it -...

Southern rail letting you book for Christmas day!!!!

When the railway sells a ticket, it is a basic expectation that it will be valid for travel. What is the journey that miklcct can make for which his ticket is valid? (Given the expectation that there will be no service on that day) Selling a ticket when there will be no service - and when there...

    Customers & wagonload freight

Yes, shunters running alongside wagons pinning down brakes were a feature of some (pre-retarder) yards... In addition to the efficient (with frequent collections and deliveries) postal service, the extent of the telegraph system - both the public PO network, and the railway's own system -...

Is the Oyster system now closed to new extensions?

I think it will require - or at least be much simpler with - new cards. But changeover could be phased over time - potentially years.

Is the Oyster system now closed to new extensions?

I have picked up the idea that there is a plan for a 'new generation' Oyster Card (TfL issued) which will function the same way (as far as the Oyster/Contactless system is concerned) as a Bank/Financial Institution Contactless card - but at the end of day, after the day's 'bill' has been...

    Management By Wandering Around

When I worked in IT looking after the Operating System the (unfair) comment was that the users were there to provide a test load for the system... Then I got outsourced - and they weren't even on the same team. And the minor change or query that could just have been dealt with suddenly involved...

Why did BR not electrify Mitre Bridge Junction to Kensington Olympia?

One other example was through Camden Road to Maiden Lane FLT (shortlived)

Installing ‘dummy’ 3rd rail on a preserved railway and the potential safety issues?

The Dean Forest Railway has a short piece of third rail installed, for familiarisation training by contractor track workers, near but not actually at Norchard HL. I don't recall what if any warning signs there are; but as far as I know there is no provision to energise it.

    When did PA announcements start?

Did not BR run 'Radio Trains' at some point in the 1950s-early 1960s? I seem to recall reading about them in North Wales and Scotland.

Oyster Travelcard no requirement to touch out - loophole?

I think in this case it is actually an offence under section 5(3)(b) - by holding a travelcard, fare has been paid for the relevant zones, i.e.distance; by not touching out additional fare for the additional distance has not been paid, deliberatly not touching out demonstrates intenf for this...

Introducing RailUK Tickets - support the forum when booking your rail tickets!

Can it issue tickets from London Travelcard boundaries? (They aren't listed under 'What can't you sell?') If so, what do do I need to enter where? How are tickets bought through the site delivered? In what format(s) are they? (And as an obvious question, why isn't it in the FAQ?)
