    Splitting Southeastern

I would say 1899, when the SECR came about combining the SER (which had built the extension from London Bridge to Charing Cross and Cannon Street, always under common management) and LCDR. Unwinding that, all the subsequent links to combine them, and sorting out HighSpeed would be neither...

    MML vs GCML

Something that is only apparent when you look at old maps - dating from when railways were new - is the extent to which railways, and their stations were built on the (then) edge of towns (which then grew out around them. The GC was unusual in Nottingham and Leicester in actually building...

Would there be potential for a legal challenge on accessibility in DOO areas?

If it was specified, I'm sure manufacturers would change their offerings to to provide. And AIUI the current LU S-stock fleet - which does have UK standard platform height floors - is part of Alsthom's Electrostar offering, so surely other Electrostar customers could have specified the same for...

Inadequate Metrolink ticketing facilities at Manchester Victoria

That is because they do know what they are doing, and so have no need to read signs... which they don't think will tell them anything new...

LNWR Stranded me in London. What should I have done?

When the OP was at Birmingham, how apparent was the chaos? With two successive LNW Euston trains - and many others (when was the train he got cancelled beyond Northampton?) - being cancelled, I would suggest it was, and that - in consequence - for him to have engaged with passenger services...

France needs better slow trains, not just fast ones

Can be read in full at https://archive.ph/wtZZ4 (Same website can be used to get around many paywalls)

Do any railways still act as common carriers for freight?

I think your statement "that American railroads have powerless unions, minimal safety and labour regulation" is very far from the truth - even if it might be the case for many other industries. And whether their customers are captive is very much a matter for debate (but is to at least to some...

    iPhone camera/ email difficulty

Something I have experienced is that some e-mail services/software (not all, and I forget details) will - when e-mailing an image - embed it in the e-mail at a reduced size/quality, rather than attaching it in full glory (and size). I suspect this may be the cause of the OP's problem.

    Late platform changes.

Yes, fully accept that may be the case. In which case the lesser delay while passengers transfer to the new platform HAS to be accepted.

    uber VAT receipt

The principle behind TOMS is that the tour operator buys the services (transport, hotel, meals, entertainment, etc.) that make up a tour from various suppliers, under various VAT regimes (UK or not, standard or zero rated or exempt, etc.) and, when charging their customer, pass on the gross cost...

    Late platform changes.

While that specific case may not recur, there are still possibilities for last moment changes of island at London Bridge - one in particular was discussed here a year or two or three back, when a Thameslink was diverted on to one of the SE platforms. There are frequent announcements and posters...

Trivia: Railway lines in other countries with more than four tracks.

The other thing to clarify is what is meant by 'line' - what is the difference between one (multi track) line, and two (fewer track) lines alongside each other? So - going back to the initial examples quoted - I would classify Finchley Road - Harrow-on-the-Hill as two lines (one LUL, ex...

Why are the two dates, May and December, chosen for timetable changes?

Looking on the FTE website (link given above) they have been celebrating their 150th anniversary, with downloadable booklet, etc. While it reveals that the decision to change the (European) timetable change date from the end of May ("midnight (2400) on last Saturday in May") to around change of...

    Fixing Thameslink

Retention of the Wimbledon-Sutton loop through the core was a political decision - plan was for it to terminate it at Blackfriars. Perhaps the missed opportunity of Thameslink was four tracks from Blackfriars to Farringdon (with terminating bays there): the LC&D to Holborn Viaduct had been 4...

    Unbelievably Late Closures

The Abandonment of Railways Act dates from 1850... Tbe Newmarket and Chesterford Railway line from Six Mile Bottom to Chesterford closed in 1851.

Inadequate Metrolink ticketing facilities at Manchester Victoria

My qustion was for a COMPLETE set of instructions, not just for TfGM Metrolink (or TfL Tube or DLR)... for which your answer is woefully inadequate. (Thinks: perhaps those with appropriate authority might like to split this off to a seperate thread)

Why can't Trainsplit sell a combination of a London Travelcard and Boundary Zone ticket?

This came up in the Introducing RailUK Tickets thread - I raised it, and an answer (details of which I forget) was produced.

Inadequate Metrolink ticketing facilities at Manchester Victoria

Noting that TfGM is offering a 'free city centre' bus, I would think it a sensible idea to make the city centre a free travel zone (for all trams and buses, if not trains, in the zone), with a zero fare/no ticket required situation, as done in some other places. But Metrolink is not using the...

    Measuring using chains

I believe that, certainly at some terminals, the datum (zero point) was the property line, and not the end (or should I say start) of track - Paddington may well be such.

    Measuring using chains

When LU did a remeasure back at the beginning of the 1970s to metric standards, with a logical system based on a zero point at Ongar, I understand BR considered a similar project - but blanched at the cost. (My understanding, as an aside, is that TfL/LU have now abandoned the 'Ongar' system, in...
