European Commission supports 10 cross-border rail projects

If the current UK government wasn’t so hell bent into provoking the EU, that one might be solvable. The Schengen countries are rather more relaxed than the UK on having passport controls on board trains (still happens routinely on Schengen borders), and besides the risk of refugees first going...

European Commission supports 10 cross-border rail projects

Not very likely. Even just using classic lines on both sides of the Channel, an 8 am arrival time in Paris would see the train passing through London around 2 am, I suppose. And besides, with a 2h+ journey time on E*, London - Paris does not need night services.

    May 2023 changes

Having a lot of experience in public administration- albeit not in the UK, but I believe bureaucracies work the same everywhere - I can say that it is exactly as you describe.

European Commission supports 10 cross-border rail projects

Same here. It’s easy to find, say, Hungarian or Slovak staff who speak German, but almost impossible to find Austrian staff who speak one of our Eastern neighbours‘ languages.

European Commission supports 10 cross-border rail projects

Possibly for the whole journey, but at least parts of the journey is not unheard of: ÖBB drivers are on EC(E) Zurich - Munich services all the way to Munich and have (or are about to) started to work from St Gallen. The real issue is language. Not a big problem between Brussels and Amsterdam...

European Commission supports 10 cross-border rail projects

Since the HSL Perpignan - Barcelona is used for freight as well, a LHCS passenger train there should be feasible.

European Commission supports 10 cross-border rail projects

This one is almost certain to run with TI ETR610. I doubt RJ2 will be approved for the Bologna - Firenze HSL anytime soon, or ever (because of the high weight of ÖBB 1216). In fact, a year ago there were provisional paths for a ETR610-run Milano - Munich in the timetable, but apparently the...

49€ Ticket to come and worry about slashing rail services

Since the purpose of the Austrian Klimaticket was precisely to encourage people to change over from car travel, I believe my benchmark is correct. It would be different for regional seasons mainly aimed at commuters, but those tickets have existed in Austria for decades anyway.

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

The double deck stock will go. It‘s very expensive to maintain, old, not very comfortable ans, as you say, niche. I don‘t have more details, sorry. Both should be possible technically.

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

From an Austrian rail forum: - Italy NJ services are planned to switch to the new sets between September and December 2023; from the timetable change in December, all services to Italy should run with the new sets; - Between December 2023 and February 2024, the Brenner day trains should change...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

Once the new NJ sets get approval, it is certainly the plan for all Italy services to switch over as fast as possible, for the regulatory reasons I have pointed out upthread, and to free the old sets for the planned new and increased services. As to Amsterdam, Zurich etc with the new sets...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

It’s not yet a huge problem - but apparently it is the reason the Milan sleeper had to serve Porta Garibaldi instead of Centrale even before the extension to La Spezia - but in the middle to long term, there is a risk non-reversible train sets will not be allowed into Santa Lucia, Santa Maria...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

No, it’s a general rule that has nothing to do with the tunnels, which are (until the Brenner tunnel opens) all outside of Italy anyway. Grandfather rights have a sunset clause to them, and while that keeps being extended (mainly so not to stop traffic to Austria, where only the RJ sets in...

    Javelins and the like

The continuous heavy delays at Deutsche Bahn and their very low reliability rather show they have much too little slack in the system. Admittedly, the problem are not the new HSL, but rather the rail network in and around major cities as well as many mixed-use classic lines which have not yet...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

One of the problems with (night) trains to Italy are the very specific Italian fire protection rules which are much more onerous than the RIC standard. Those are they main reason ÖBB is buying new stock for day and night services into Italy and also mean that refurbished older stock cannot be...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

Airlines routinely offer their flights for much less on connections than on point-to-point trips in order to fill the planes. It’s nothing special and makes economic sense as long as the marginal costs are covered. Of course, E* might not do it if they think they can fill every seat on their...

    Public transport on Christmas day

In Austria, 25/12 and 26/12, being public holidays, have a Sunday schedule. 24/12 is a half working day (with shops open until the early afternoon), although loads of people have the day off. As such, it has - more or less - a Saturday schedule, which in urban transport usually thins out around...

France needs better slow trains, not just fast ones

Democracy doesn’t run on efficiency alone, which the French should have learned a long time ago, and recently from the gillets jaunes (the same is true for the UK…as should have been found out when the red wall crumbled). The Swiss know very well why each of their rail investment plans gives...
