    Bernina Express - advice desired!

And everybody working there needs a vacation (plus there will be renovations etc) - there is usually no break during winter and summer.

    Status of new French LGVs

I would rephrase it: they chose the sensible option. The direct line would really only be useful for Nice - Paris, not such an important market and where air would still have been competitive. Even Nice - Marseille would not have profited significantly more than with the new version. The new...

    Status of new French LGVs

I am not sure that is strictly true. The big push towards a French national network only came after the enormous success of the LGV Sud-Est (one should never forget that the LGV SE, like HS2, was primarily about capacity, not speed). After that, announcing new LGV became a favourite marketing...

    Status of new French LGVs

Very much possible; those signalers might very will speak some German. The thing is: it is much easier to staff a border station with some bilingual staff, than to only have bilingual drivers (which will come from all over the place).

DSB buys 16 cab cars from Talgo

The Talgos won‘t have underfloor motors.

    Status of new French LGVs

Possible. I doubt it is an EU rule though, since Austrian drivers go to Breclav, Petrzalka, Hegyeshalom, etc all the time and hardly any of these speak even a word of Czech, Slovak or Hungarian.

DSB buys 16 cab cars from Talgo

Which is a good point, but journey time would not be attractive from Denmark when going via Köln and then trundling down the Rhine.

    Status of new French LGVs

Probably a bit if both? I think the through traffic to Irun stopped when tbe „Duplex Océane“ began to run? In any case, since some TGV Duplex run to Barcelona and others for Ouigo Spain, it really seems to be a case of „can’t be bothered“.

    Status of new French LGVs

Well, they recently cancelled their cooperation on the route via Perpignan, with the result that a terrible timetable got even worse. If something happens on either route (Hendaye or Perpignan), it will probably be due to initiatives by the regions (there is scope and there are plans for...

    Status of new French LGVs

Marseille - Nice will not be an entirely new HSL, rather a combination of upgrades and new-built, including an underground through station in Marseille. See an map for instance on this (French) site...

Switzerland to Milan: Switching origin from Montreux to Lausanne

As far as I know, SBB has been legally obliged to offer a number of such advances by the regulator, as part of its approval of train tariffs. I don’t know the details but they probably have to offer them on a variety of services, so as not to discriminate against specific user groups - it’s not...

    Vienna - suggestions?

if you want to have a really quaint railway experience, you could take a train from Wien Hbf running to Traiskirchen Aspangbahn. It is going to be a quite old - if a bit boring - single class 5047 DMU running over infrastructure that has hardly seen any modernization over the last century...

Nightjet Brussels or Paris - Vienna - any recent experience?

Unfortunately, nobody should ever count on a NightJet train traversing Germany to be even halfway on-time. It happens, but it’s the exception - and hour-long delays are not uncommon. Trains to/from Italy can also be heavily delayed. Apart from limited capacity, it probably is the major...

Strasbourg to Frankfurt - reservations compulsory on ICE?

The France-Germany ICE *and* TGV, within Germany, are normal German long-distance trains, usable in any way that is otherwise permissible for ICE trains. The only question is, where „does Germany begin“. For the purpose of these trains, it seems that the section to the first station in Germany...

49€ Ticket to come and worry about slashing rail services

I doubt they pay even the tiniest percentage of the cost of financing the 49€-ticket. Introduce a 49£-ticket for all public transport in the UK except long-distance trains, then we can talk cancellation policies. 1681335582 And rightly so. It is a ticket financed by Austrian taxpayers for...

49€ Ticket to come and worry about slashing rail services

How is it red tape to have a real bargain offer that you can cancel monthly? Not something I can relate to. Sounds like a very first-world problem. And in case that you didn’t notice: the 49 €-ticket is meant for people living in Germany - and paid by them through taxes. If tourists benefit...

    Regional Operating Contracts in France

I don’t think the idea of being able to sack the national operator is novel at all. Such contracts, be they signed with the own national operator, subsidiaries of other national operators or real private companies regularly have such clauses; they are included in the terms of tender. In reality...
