Plans for a Glasgow Metro network and Central-Queen Street tunnel unveiled

Look familiar? This was a previous proposal from the 1980s as reported in Rail Magazine, it was crazy at that time as they actually wanted to close Central and Queen Street and route everything through the tunnel

Plans for a Glasgow Metro network and Central-Queen Street tunnel unveiled

The proposal for a tunnel from Cowlairs to Shields Junction appeared in Rail magazine back in the 1980s, it was hilarious back then as there was no plans for any electrification and the image of 156/158s accelerating away up the hill from a deep level station didn't bear thinking about. If a...

    'EYESORES'

Coatbridge Central - ever since the platform level buildings were demolished and the street level station building sold off, effectively detaching it from the station it has been a total disgrace, the subway to access the southbound platform is a hell hole

Plans for a Glasgow Metro network and Central-Queen Street tunnel unveiled

These think tanks come around every now and again revisiting ideas that have been around since the 1970s but with no concept as to how these are going to be paid for, I doubt if I will see this in my lifetime. One part of the scheme that I think that Network Rail will have issues with is the...

What preserved railway extension would you most like to see?

Couple of other Scottish ones that are aspirations of the existing lines - Strathspey railway into Grantown of Spey (needs approximately £5 million) and The Scottish Industrial Railway Centre to buy the existing mothballed freight line and run from Patna to their old site at Dalmellington

    ScotRail must-haves

On the last point, it is possible to go to Largs, pick up a local bus (very frequent) to Weymss Bay and return to Glasgow by that route

    Freight-only lines Q

Good example of what you are looking for is the Southern entrance to (what is left of) Millerhill Yard, electrified, theoretically capable of any traffic but restricted to freight as the points are hand worked. I believe that the odd railtour has worked over the section with preparation, i.e...

When did fish traffic from north east Scotland finish?

1976 according to this site, which gives a very detailed description of the fish traffic on the ECML http://www.bloodandcustard.net/bluespot.html

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

If you were to attract the conveyance of fish to rail, you would have to provide a reasonably high speed service, just like before when the fish trains were given priority

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

If there was the will to ship the fish by rail, then I would think that the Tesco model would be more suitable, with the fish being packed into containers at Peterhead, transshipped to rail at Aberdeen then to a distribution site in the south.

    Rail "mystery tours"?

I went on a few from Glasgow in the 1970s, you could usually work out a rough idea of the destination from the departure station (Queen Street or Central) and the journey time, destinations tended to be very predictable, Morcambe, Blackpool or Chester from Central and Inverness or York from...

00 Gauge Colour Light Signals query

I had many colour light signals, both LED and grain of wheat bulb on my last layout, after experimentation I used a transformer with a 9V output and with some additional resistance provided a nice intensity of light. These transformers can be salvaged form various old low voltage electrical...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

To allow some relief on the ECML, it might be possible to reinstate four tracks from the old Monktonhall Junction (just to the east of the Esk Viaduct) then upgrade the Millerhill loop lines to allow passenger traffic in conjunction with the Portobello Junction upgrade. Stopping services form...

Trivia - the closest rail to you that you've never been a passenger on?

At one time I had done the entire Scottish Network, but the sods keep opening lines, closest that i haven't done is probably the Larkhall Branch, with the Anniesland branch and Cowlairs curve a close second/third, keep meaning to set aside a day and catch up with the bits and pieces that I have...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Services on the Glasgow/Edinburgh - Dundee/Aberdeen corridor(s) prior to 1967 were very much along pre-nationalisation lines, from Glasgow (Buchanan Street) services went to Dundee (originally Dundee West) and to Aberdeen via Forfar, all on ex LMS metals, services from Edinburgh ran up the coast...
