Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

What would the maximum fare be from Birmingham New Street? What would someone who taps in at New Street and travels to Canley on a packed train but forgets to tap out be charged. The journey takes place on a packed train in the evening peak with absolutely no chance of an onboard check.

help please. I received a court letter.

You are being prosecuted under the TfL Byelaws. If you are convicted (which you will be if you plead guilty and even if you plead not guilty TfL will win as they've got you bang to rights) then you will have to pay: - A fine based on your income, normally discounted by a third for pleading...

Preference to buy tickets from a ticket office

Couldn’t they just email it to the customer? So they get a ticket they can show on their phone without them having to but it through an app or website.

Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

You get charged a maximum fare, but this is not too punative in relatively small systems. So Penzance to Wick ould mean a maximum fare of around £170 assuming single leg pricing was in place. But you'd need to charge the same maximum fare everywhere (because the system wouldn't know what...

Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

If I touch in at Penzance and travel to Wick but fail to touch out what is charged? How would this be different to someone touching in at Penzance and travelling to St Erth but forgetting to touch out?

Chief Magistrate ruling on prosecuting appealed Penalty Fares (February 2025)

One of the CM's arguments is that someone who appeals a Penalty Fare is immune from prosecution but someone who doesn't appeal can still be prosecuted and this doesn't seem right or what was intended.

Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

I do think that complex fares are used as an excuse. On a network with 2,500+ stationsit is inevitable that there will be complexities and you just know the simplification proposed will be the removal of good value fares. A promise to pay system would need to be used in some circumstances...

Caught short faring - West Midlands Trains - advice needed

Welcome to the forum. DO NOT contact the train company ahead of them contacting you. Wait for their letter - this is because you don't know what the letter is going to say and there is a risk you could inadvertently incriminate yourself by contacting them now. Also, without a case reference...

    Buying an All Line Rover

Not all AMEX card holders get 10%. I'm only getting 5% at present!

Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

Cash is a potential issue. Short term I really don't see an alternative to a Promise to Pay system but we've seen cash eliminated on buses in London so it can be done (I know it's not exactly the same scenario but we need to look at the art of the possible here). There are also efficiency and...

Stopped at London Waterloo from Hither Green

Only you can decide this. What you need to do is straightforward, the facts of the case are not disputes but you need to make sure you clearly comminucate to SOutheastern what has happened and what you want.

Stopped at London Waterloo from Hither Green

Agreed. The letter as it's written seems more like a normal 'standard' reply to an initial letter asking for your version of events. It needs to clearly state: 1. That you've been sent a summons for next week 2. That you didn't receive the initial letters due to moving house 3. Apologise...

Stopped at London Waterloo from Hither Green

Welcome to the forum! Don't send this, it requires amendment. If you've been sent a court summons you need to state this in the letter, tell them why you didn't reply to their initial letter and ask them (very nicely) if they will consider settling out of court. You aren't entitled to an out...

Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

Why? I'm talking about installing ticket machines at all stations. Nothing to do with service frequency. Given the reduction in TVMs at many stations due to changing purchasing habits I doubt you'd even need any new TVM, just relocate existing machines. No. That just adds ambiguity which is...

    Buying an All Line Rover

Yes, it's perfectly ok to buy the ticket on the day of travel but do make sure the ticket office will be open at the time you want to purchase it.

Discussion about "Train ticket enforcement must be fair and proportionate, watchdog warns"

A few things that I think need calling out: The report blames the 'complex' fares system and I agree that fares can be complex but I don't believe this is the root cause of the problem. My suspicion is part of the reason for the rise in prosecutions in recent years is due to e-tickets making...

Advice responding to fare evasion letter

Welcome to the forum! Unfortunately as you now know, your ticket wasn't valid on the service between Kings Cross and Cambridge. Also, for information season tickets are not available as barcoded tickets, they can only be sold as a traditional paper ticket, smartcard or sometimes held in an app...

Received a 'Greater Anglia Fraud Investigations' Email

Just to clarify the position and your options. You basically have two choices: 1. Do nothing. Greater Anglia will continue to write to you threatening police involvement, prosecution for fraud etc. The important principle here is that purchasing tickets is not illegal but using tickets...
