£48m boost for Penistone line service doubling and capacity increases

There was another article on YorkshireLive yesterday about the proposed improvements to the Penistone line, unfortunately can't link as the annoying adverts were playing havoc with my device! The TLDR- of the article is that the initial £1.5m of funding has been released by Kirklees Council for...

Should the TransPennine Upgrade project include more line speed raising and four tracking?

Once the four tracking is complete, trains from Brighouse will hopefully get a clear run from the chord onto the slow lines as the fasts will be segregated.

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

The cynic in me wonders if the Weaver name is WYCA "biting its thumb" at Lancashire, whose textile industry has far more baggage for modern eyes (cotton being strongly associated with American slavery) than Yorkshire's... ;) Can't say I'm particularly enamoured with it though, the chance of...

    What is a junction?

There's also "junctions" where a diverging route used to exist but no longer does. Clayton West Junction was formerly the junction for the branch to Clayton West but is now the southern end of a passing loop. Elsewhere in the Huddersfield area there's Springwood Junction where the Sheffield line...

    Gathurst has an expensive toilet

Thanks for the correction- indeed AIUI most operators do as you say. Hence you'll see notes on platform displays about "no toilets available on board this service", but never "no accessible toilet on board".

    Gathurst has an expensive toilet

It happens elsewhere on the railway- if a unit has a universally accessible toilet and a space-saver toilet on board, it can continue in service if the smaller toilet is out of use but not if the universal one is.

Major Engineering Work Planned at Clifton (Cumbria) to Replace WestCoast Mainline Bridge Over M6 - Jan 2026

I was being a bit facetious as I'm sure you're aware. There are 4 lanes per direction at the M25 viaduct now, but there were originally 3.

Major Engineering Work Planned at Clifton (Cumbria) to Replace WestCoast Mainline Bridge Over M6 - Jan 2026

Whenever there's a rail-over-motorway bridge replacement discussion, I always think about how much foresight Victorian engineers had when building viaducts, that they often made their arches just the right width to fit a 3-lane motorway carriageway (M60 at Stockport, M25 near Rickmansworth)...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

I may be misremembering, but I think the Morley station relocation allowed the modest speed increase. I'm not a civil engineer though, so I've no idea how that works!

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

To be honest I don't think the branding has ever been particularly consistent when it comes to capitalisation. The 141s from new in their Verona green & buttermilk livery had "Metrotrain" branding (just the initial M in upper-case) but when the red livery and "M" came in the branding was all...

Stopping a train in platform 9 and 3/4

Strong it what sense, though? You'd want your buffers to absorb the energy from the collision by sliding backwards- possibly all the way into the concourse, otherwise you're just introducing the unstoppable force to an immovable object and turning everyone on board into chunky marinara sauce...

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

Perhaps the hope is that the tram/light-rail will actually happen and that can take the Metro name. The pessimist in me expects a horrible gimmicky name that hasn't been thought through. Something that hangs on the coat-tails of Greater Manchester's "Bee Network" without having the same kudos...

Class 175’s to GWR - possible livery ideas?

Must be a shortage of skipper livery images for it to draw (no pun intended) from!

    Dual–Named Stations?

Turning the topic on its head for a moment, the city of Brighton & Hove has separate stations for each named part!

Weird Places for Services to Terminate

That's one of the last examples of turnbacks at PTE boundaries, I believe. There used to be more, for example the Leeds to Huddersfield stoppers used to run through to Marsden on Sundays.

What class do you think you'd have been in on the Titanic?

Voted for the Isle of Wight answer for the comedy value. In reality if I'd been alive in 1912 I'd have died shortly after due to having a medical condition that was difficult to treat until the 1920s.

Class 175’s to GWR - possible livery ideas?

No yellow panel either so you'd have to upgrade the headlights. Unrelated, but that Avanti "diversity" unit that certain parts of the press are getting all hot and bothered about appears to be only technically compliant with the regulations- the doors are a distinct colour but not particularly...

Trivia: Platforms you cannot freely 'roam'

I'm surprised the sort of people who take part in such activities would even know there was a station there, let alone choose to get together for said activities at Peartree of all places... Then again I wouldn't have expected Burscough Junction to be a vandalism hotspot either, but here we are!

    Dual–Named Stations?

A couple of successive stations that have lost their "...& X" are Denby Dale (formerly Denby Dale & Cumberworth) and Shepley (formerly Shepley & Shelley, though the second "e" in Shelley was erroneously omitted). On the same line, Berry Brow could be Newsome & Berry Brow, but never has been...

    Which junctions would you grade-separate?

Serious suggestion: Woking. Tongue-in-cheek suggestion: Springwood junction just west of Huddersfield station (where the line to Barnsley leaves the main line to Manchester) just because it would be interesting to see how you'd achieve it in such a tight space.
