    Remaining class 58s

8% isn't a bad survival rate without the context that only a few years ago the survival rate was closer to 80% (though with the added complication of most survivors being overseas and stored in the open). Does that current figure of 4 include the one that's been donated to the LMS 10000 project...

    Older cars you have seen

Yesterday evening, as I came down the slip road from the rotary section of Lofthouse Interchange (from M1 northbound onto M62 westbound) I passed a "well used" Volvo 240 Estate in pale blue, on an L suffix plate. Unfortunately at no point was it within the scope of my dashcam in order to capture it.

    What's your latest acquisition?

That's very similar to a pack my brother and I bought with pooled pocket money back in around 1991... ours was in blue though, with 9006 and two of the three coaches being mk2s (along with a mk1 buffet car). I think it cost us about £25, which a quick check tells me is the equivalent of £59.70...

Trivia: Unfulfilled or unsuccessful franchise bid promises

I vaguely remember a RAIL article about Sea Containers' "GSWR" bid. Supposedly there were proposals to relocate and rebuild Clapham Junction, and even the suggestion of double-deck trains... though this was RAIL so a punch of salt is required.

Higher-spec Austin Montegos had headlamp wipers... and they were a popular extra in Scandinavia in the 70s and 80s (based on the number of imported Fords so fitted, which were in a big auction that took place over the weekend). Used to get very jealous of the kids that got to sit in the...

Is Open Access abstractive or does it genuinely plug gaps?

They're also not exactly "cherry-picking the most profitable bits" (as an MP was quoted as saying a couple of months back on this thread) either though. On the Bradford side of things, would LNER have increased their Bradford services without Grand Central demonstrating that there was untapped...

Last use of non-bogie passenger carrying stock on scheduled services

If we look beyond our shores, Talgo sets don't use conventional bogies...

"X for Y" - stations that should perhaps have another name added to them but don't have at present

If Burley Park was to be renamed, Hyde Park would be the obvious alternative (though it could confuse a few very uninformed tourists!) as that's what the area on the uphill side of the station is called. As for assisting people going to events, I'm sure the mayor's Weaver Network changes could...

"X for Y" - stations that should perhaps have another name added to them but don't have at present

If it wasn't for having to negotiate the treacherous (whether on foot, bike, bus or even car) Chain Bar interchange, Low Moor could become Low Moor for Cleckheaton. A bit more of a stretch would be adding "for Holmfirth" to Denby Dale. You'd want to guarantee connections to the buses though...

Should car accidents have more prominent reporting?

That's actually workable too, unlike the earlier suggestion that would require a complete reworking of the legal system and probably also the invention of time travel. 1787063156 Just for clarity, are you suggesting that we have different speed limits depending on how "qualified" a driver is...

    Worst/best preservation liveries?

The first time it wore that livery (1990s) it was also renumbered 40445... another layer of "what if" if they'd fitted Electric Train Supply!

Should car accidents have more prominent reporting?

Lots of pedestrians are also oblivious to that one. Several times I've stopped to allow pedestrians across at junctions and roundabouts (when it's safe to do so), gestured clearly, and been met with a blank stare!

    West Yorkshire bus franchising

I've seen a few dotted about. Star Garage in Shelley (towards Huddersfield) on the B6116 (served by what is currently the Team Pennine Denby Darts D1 service from Huddersfield to Denby Dale) has had a green Weaver Network flag for a few weeks now. AIUI Huddersfield area is among the first to be...

    Loconundrum

A very odd routing the other day, had me travelling past the target station and doubling back... and as there was a direct service between my starting station and the target, I'm pretty sure the route suggested is not a permitted one!

Should car accidents have more prominent reporting?

That sort of information usually comes out later, and Police can't release that information if criminal proceedings are likely to follow.

    Older cars you have seen

I'll blame the silly fancy writing! When it initially drove past I thought "that looks French" but couldn't read the badging as anything other than Packard. Once my brain decided that's what it said, that was it! Looking again it's quite obviously Panhard on the front, so I was clearly just...

How would Selby (Great Heck accident) be different in 2026?

Modern safety features such as lane-keeping assist and driver-facing cameras almost certainly make an accident like Great Heck less likely to happen, and it's possible that had such a system existed at the time it may have alerted the driver that he was going off the road, prompting him to...

    Loconundrum

I got a bit lucky and made it in 3 guesses. Initially went the wrong direction from my cross-London transfer, but my next guess happened to be the target station. It helped that my second guess gave an additional clue.
