Why people are so stuborn not using their ticket but rather showing to staff to open gates?

There are an increasing number of ticket gates at LU stations where mag stripe ticket acceptance is out of order.

    Walking and Rambling discussion

Looking at my Strava app moving time was 5h15, total time was 6h09. I seem to remember we stopped a couple of times during the walk.

    Walking and Rambling discussion

I walked the whole Brampton Valley Way on a very hot day in 2021. 28.3km which took me 5h15. I'm from Northampton so am familiar with where the walk starts, I took a bus to Kings Heath and started there. Lots of building work is taking place in this area at the moment and I'm unsure how this...

Revenue protection officer only took down postcode

When a postal redirect is set up a letter is sent to the old address. If a letter arrived at my house about a postal redirection for someone who had absolutely no connection with my house I would be asking some questions.

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

It's not my area of expertise but I believe it's done manually. When I say manually, it's probably updated automatically via a data feed by the supplier so if a can of baked beans weighs 420g the self scan is looking for an increase in weight of between 410 and 430g when it is scanned. I don't...

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

Weighing scales are an important part of loss control at self checkouts but what is key is making sure that the buying teams correctly update the expected weight of each item in the range, and a suitable tolerance is added where appropriate wher ethe weight can vary (eg fresh lettuce as these...

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

I've not used a staffed checkout in a supermarket for at least 15 years. It is so much faster to use self checkout (for a small number of purchases) or smart shop for larger purchases. I have some sympathy over jobs however you cannot stop progress. For example: - Who gets the operator to...

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

It's totally enclosed, inside the concourse building.

Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

You could see the platforms from the concourse at Stevenage until someone decided to vinyl the windows with adverts encouraging people to buy tickets using the Thameslink app the same week that Project Oval launched... Concourse isn't a word I usually associate with Mill Hill Boradway! Always...

London Victoria to Brighton ticket valid from London Bridge?

That ticket is not valid at London Bridge, it's only valid from London Victoria to Brighton. For a ticket to be valid from London Bridge it needs to say, London Bridge, London Thameslink or London Terminals or be from a station north of London that involves a cross-London connection.

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

Like on the railway barriers don't show you've paid for everything. They are one tool in the tool box. Whether in a supermarket or on the railway, there is no one method that can conclusively make sure that everyone has paid for everything. If there was it would have been put in place years ago.

    Trainline selling misleading tickets

Every day is a school day! But my point still stands that the term 'open return' should be consigned to history. It's not just whether open return means same day or period, but we're seeing more evening restrictions as fares are 'simplified', which has the potential to cause more confusion.

    The biggest split ticket savings

I'm not going to name the route, but many years ago I stumbled across this forum by accident when I was looking for ways to make my rail travel to rugby matches cheaper. I'm not going to give exact details but it involved travel out of Paddington in the evening peak. An Anytime return was...

Multi-factor authentication on TfL journey history portal

I'd like a website that stores your personal details like name, address, date of birth and your bank card details, and was subjected to a massive cyber attack a couple of years ago to have a high level of security.

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

The theory is the barriers are a deterrent. They won't deter everyone but they deter some, although industry research I was involved in a few years ago suggested they weren't effective and the retailer I was working for at the time decided not to install any more. One of the issues is the...

Ease of walking off without paying by accident at self checkouts?

I've spent years of my working life dealing with losses caused by checkouts in supermarkets (all varieties - staffed, self-scan and smartshop). If you pay using a contactless card then one of the security features is that you'll be asked to validate your PIN from time to time. I could go into...

Parking at MML station nearish to Luton

I agree with Luton Airport Parkway. My go-to parking option when I'm flying out of Luton for a short break. If you do want soewhere further north then I'd go for Harlington - very close to J12 and much easier to get to than Flitwick.

    Trainline selling misleading tickets

That is not an official rail industry named ticket. That’s a ticket retailer doing their own thing. As I’ve said a couple of times already the term ‘open return’ is confusing, different people think it means different things and the term really needs confining to history.

    Trainline selling misleading tickets

There is no ticket called ‘open return’ and what this thread shows, once again, is that different people think ‘open return’ means different things. This term really needs binning off.
