Class 701 SWR introduction delays: what should happen now?

Conspiracy theory time. Tin foils hats at the ready... DfT are doing things behind the scenes to frustrate SWR introducing the 701s. The day after nationalisation, these barriers will disappear. Massive success story. Tea and medals for the transport secretary.

Trivia: Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage?

I know it's not a station, and is not British Rail, but I took a picture years ago (so can't find it right now) of a sign in Croydon instructing people not to trespass on the railway. From the Southern Railway.

Class 701 SWR introduction delays: what should happen now?

Which makes sense on paper. But instead we have zero weeks on training. I'm guessing it is not acceptable to deliver the course, without the DCO practice and then sign the candidates off as competent on the traction but not yet competent on the DCO bits, with a plan to get those signed off...

Class 701 SWR introduction delays: what should happen now?

ASLEF happy, DfT happy, SWR happy. So... Why no course? Again, genuine question and not trying to sound antagonistic... What does the new course involve? If the old one was "How to drive the train, how to deal with issues on the train, and how to DCO" can't that last bit be ripped out and the...

Class 701 SWR introduction delays: what should happen now?

Right, that's where my knowledge ends. That has been said a few times, but as someone on the outside I don't understand it. The training included degraded working before? (Which seems to be everywhere as degraded?) Genuine question - why can they not run the same kind of training, doing...

Class 701 SWR introduction delays: what should happen now?

Why can't they still run the old course? If it covers a range of things, including things that are not currently available, it is not creating gaps. I would see the issue if it was the other way round and being expected to do things outside of training. I've been trained and assessed on pieces...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Wasn't there a FoI... some time ago... it's all a blur now, and the result was a heavily redacted version due to commercial sensitivity? Or am I thinking of something else?

Stations rebranded to Great British Railways design / Rail Alphabet 2 & 3

Well, I was able to remember the wrong bit of the message! I can see that as well, but I'm imagining a busier sign with it. This way for platforms 1-4, that way for 5-8, that way for the ticket hall, that was for the buses and toilets. Having four big bold arrows with small text might make the...

Stations rebranded to Great British Railways design / Rail Alphabet 2 & 3

Indeed, and TfL is a good example of that with the different colour roundels for different purposes. But you do also get things that tend not to change and then jump out when they are not following the spec. Imagine a Tesco trolley in the middle of a line of Sainsbury's ones. It does the same...

Stations rebranded to Great British Railways design / Rail Alphabet 2 & 3

I think it is possible to have a consistent style, but also one that conveys a tone/style/character. What's needed is a clear, legible design that works between scales - digital, large signage, leaflets - and looks "right". Some design choices may look sloppy, and lead to an attitude of "if you...

Stations rebranded to Great British Railways design / Rail Alphabet 2 & 3

D looks very heavy in comparison to the others. Yes, it looks like How It Used To Be Done, but it looks very out of proportion to everything else on the sign

Bikes on trains - do I have priority over somebody sat in the bike storage area?

Thanks for the backup - I was going to pin it on that era. I couldn't remember the name or role of the senior boss guy, but I also couldn't remember if it was still British Rail or Railtrack or an early TOC.

Bikes on trains - do I have priority over somebody sat in the bike storage area?

I remember something on TV many many years ago. I think it was a news article about bike storage. Or possibly about people owning two bikes, one to cycle to their home station and one stored at their (usually London) destination. Some senior rail boss says something like "I don't understand why...

Gatwick Express stock re-badged to Southern

Again, my question was a hypothetical. I should have been clearer on that. But the responses back are "if this has happened, you need to do X". The question was whether anything exists to deal with it happening in the first place. From the sound of it, enforcement isn't that active at the...

    Disclosing spent convictions

Large company, digested to another large company. Perhaps the advert did mention the Act. It was many years ago, and I am probably so used to seeing it mentioned in job descriptions that I paid no attention to it? Our software is used by UK and international fire, ambulance, and police...

    Disclosing spent convictions

One of the things I do is software development. We have been told repeatedly about the importance of declaring interactions with the police. But the company doesn't want the declaration, it needs to go to an external vetting agency who will then update the company as needed (I remember one...

Derailment between Hersham & Walton on Thames (04/03)

There's always that balancing act of how many Responsible People you have (distinct from people who generally act responsibly...) One Responsible Person is a single point of failure, and can overlook an issue with no formal check and balance. Too many Responsible People, and you have a whole...

Gatwick Express stock re-badged to Southern

It was. Perhaps I could have been clearer. Question still stands though - is there any risk of people getting caught out by getting the "wrong train" like this?

Gatwick Express stock re-badged to Southern

Last time I got the train to the office, I saw some GX units at Havant. I think they were all doing Southampton to Brighton. It did make me wonder what would happen if one of those ended up on the Victoria service, for passengers joining at that end of the route... Especially if they are also...
