Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

A lot of modern materials are more stain-resistant than in the past, so maybe the white will hold up well.

I was being facetious, but it would definitely help if on-board staff were treated better by their employees to start with. 1651004703 I was being facetious, but it would definitely help if on-board staff were treated better by their employers to start with.

Have they also refurbished the on board service? I found a lot of the old staff were getting worn out and uncomfortable. Smiles were in short supply.

I think it's funny they still have the Virgin Red toilet doors. Did they just forget that bit?!

Nice video here to appreciate the refreshed standard class. Still has that warm cosiness. I have to say that the Pendolinos are really our only class that can compete with European stock to give that true InterCity Express feeling. All the 800x just feel like people-movers to me. No magic to...

Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

"Calm lighting" - warm glow - THANKS AVANTI. This is one of the most important aspects of comfort when travelling, and one where the harsh sterile-lit 800x stock fall short. I think Avanti might have actually listened to customers here, because every single other TOC seems to slap in some...

Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

Is it likely that the refurb Pendos will be allocated to particular routes first, or will you have an equal chance of catching one from, say, Glasgow/Manchester/Liverpool?

Great Ticket Sale courtesy of Grant Shapps

I remember in the days of Virgin Trains getting London to Manchester single for £10, £5, and even £1 once when they were experimenting with mobile tickets!

Great Ticket Sale courtesy of Grant Shapps

When I looked they seemed to be mostly discounting the late evening 4 hr 57 and 5+ hr trains instead of the faster 4 hr 30 ones. Bit mean if you ask me.

    Speed upgrades and electrification

So perhaps there isn't anything worthwhile on the WCML left then? Saving, say 15 minutes, London-Glasgow looks like it might only be achieved with 300 miles of 140mph or other impractical upgrades.

    Speed upgrades and electrification

If you zoom in on the WCML here it seems to me that the 30 miles from Carstairs to Glasgow (and less realistically the 15 miles from Watford-Euston) could definitely give some gains as all of that is <100mph, although not sure how much? https://railmap.azurewebsites.net/Public/SpeedsMap

Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

There are two things at play here. Colour temperature (2700K = yellow, 6000K = hospital white), and brightness. 2700K is similar to the colour of old filament bulbs. So possibly you wouldn't find them "dingy" if they simply improved the brightness, rather than changing the colour and the...

Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

The most important thing to me is that it seems they haven't changed the lighting colour. The pendos are one of the few trains still left with nice warm bulbs (2700K? 3000K?) rather than the hospital/supermarket clinical white (6000K?) that the 800x etc. seem to go for. It makes so much...

    Lumo journey experiences

Does anyone have any opinions on the overall experience with Lumo vs Avanti? i.e. quietness, ride quality, comfort, etc. I am planning a London-Glasgow journey on a Sunday afternoon, and it happens because of engineering works that London-Edinburgh-Glasgow works out about the same time and...

    Shipley "triangular station" question

I'm suprised that up and over a footbridge is quicker than down some steps + a straight pavement. Or did you mean to write that the other way round?

    Shipley "triangular station" question

this actually looks a lot simpler to be honest, just checked on google streetview. especially with a pushchair. according to my calc it's 200m as opposed to 190m over the footbridge!

    Shipley "triangular station" question

Thanks for all the helpful replies, that I couldn't have got just from google maps. I forgot to mention that I will have a small toddler in tow, so we'll be lucky if we make it in 4 mins! That's a shame as it will make future journeys more difficult.

    Shipley "triangular station" question

planning a tight 4 minute connection at Shipley from Platform 1 to Platform 3W. will be arriving from Carlisle to platform 1. is the footbridge at the back end of the train? and is 4 mins do-able? what does the "W" mean?

    Caledonian Sleeper

Hi, here are a few tips of mine based on a recent CS journey. I actually got a decent nights sleep despite being a light sleeper. Bring two 50x50cm sheets of kitchen foil. You can wrap these over the ring lights around the light switches which still shine when the lights are off. Removable in...
