Are the 2020s rubbish, or are some of us just getting old...

Social media is definitely worse, with (using the dissatisfaction with the modern world) 'nostalgia' being heavily used by a plethora of pages drip feeding an extreme right agenda. That aside, social media is more about advertising and driving 'content' (to get more views - which means targeted...

    GTR Summer Holiday Cancellations

Going forward, from the first Monday before Christmas Eve there will be a Saturday service on weekdays, returning to normal weekday service on the first Monday after New Years Day. This is due to there being significantly less commuting during the Christmas period. From May 2027, on GTR it is...

London Overground Unbelievable amount of cancellations

It can be worse than that. Exactly this. A few years ago I was taken ill not long before being due to start work. Result: My out and back trains were cancelled, along with the return journey that my outward stock would've made, and the outward journey of the stock I should've brought back...

Drop off fees at Train stations?

Hmm... People need to get from their home near Luton to Alicante. They can either pay to park, or pay to get dropped off. The airport love it. People need to get from their home near Luton to London. They can either pay to park at the railway station (which let's not forget during all the years...

The Labour Party under Andy Burnham

Also, 'relief' arrived quite literally the next year in 1983, with MIRAS (Mortagage Interest Relief At Source) whereby motgage interest was subject to tax relief. Everyone who mentions higher interest rates in the past, neglects to mention this substantial perk throughout most of the 80s and 90s.

Copenhagen 'tourist tax' on non-EU card payments

Okay, then make the price tag reflect the total, and give a discount for certain types of payment if you want to encourage those. Don't add an extra charge right at the very last minute in a not very transparent way.

Copenhagen 'tourist tax' on non-EU card payments

The merchant has costs to bear in taking cash payments, bagging it up and taking it to a bank or having it picked up by armoured van. Or they can take cards and pay a transaction fee. You the consumer shouldn't be paying surcharges or fees.

"All time high"?? It's the warmest May. Not the warmest day it's ever been.

London Overground Unbelievable amount of cancellations

You are right in thinking that they should be! As this has been a problem only these last few days, and that (maybe not!) coincidentally those days happen to be a bank holiday weekend at the start of school holidays with very nice weather, then the notion that there are perhaps unfilled...

London Overground Unbelievable amount of cancellations

Is it school holidays this week? Likely no one wants to work overtime on their days off during the school holidays. Especially when it's a bank holiday weekend at the start with nice weather. Picture the scene: You only get 50% of weekends off. Do you want to work these days off as overtime...

could an exchange programme work between drivers of focs and tocs?

There's other TOC's conditions I wouldn't want to be anywhere near, nevermind freight companies. I'll stick to my own trains and T&Cs thanks! 8-)

Staff being difficult over attempts to break journey

Possibly, but if travelling on a child ticket or a railcard ticket, sometimes the barriers are set up to reject these to force a manual check by staff (that the person has a valid railcard, or isn't an adult). If the OP was travelling on a railcard this may have necessitated speaking with a...

    2026 Pay Award

Whilst the offer wasn't made until November, was the pay anniversary for other grades not April though? So would be based on February 2025's inflation figure - RPI for February 2025 was 3.4%. An October pay anniversary (which the drivers at GTR have) would be based on August's inflation - RPI...

    Thameslink Orpington or Gillingham depot?

Orpington do Sevenoaks to Blackfriars trips, and Orpington to Kentish Town, which are shorter journeys than Gillingham's Rainham to Luton trips.* If you'd like to stretch your legs more often, then consider Orpington. A couple of years ago both had a similar range of start times (earliest at...

    Alternatives to UK Nationalisation

Personally, I think the way to gain major and also incremental improvements, is to have one organisation being able to coherently make adjustments without infringing on any other organisation's 'rights of access' or 'fare income abstraction'. Let's call it a 'system'. The creation of increased...

    Alternatives to UK Nationalisation

I think at least some of the negativity, is that there has been no communication as to what the direction of travel is from the government, beyond a computer generated image of a train in a union jack dress. "What's happening with the nationalisation of the railways?" People ask me. What with...
