West Midlands Trains Industrial Action July/August 2026

In some ways I agree with you. I think you are missing a key piece though. School holidays don't just affect passenger demand. They affect staff availability, both with annual leave quotas more likely to be fully used, and less staff making themselves available for overtime. In other words...

    The Train Drivers Academy Discussion

Bit confused as to why Blackfriars is listed for GTR. Or London Victoria is listed for Northern. Or that Caledonian Sleeper is listed at all.

Thameslink core broken - 13th July 26 - what could be done to improve things?

I don't know about Bedford, but Peterborough to Gatwick the cheapest tickets are LNER advances via Kings Cross and tube to Victoria - exactly the faffing around Thameslink was designed to avoid. But no one has given the fare-setters the remit to achieve Thameslink's goal. Not just Gatwick, vast...

Thameslink core broken - 13th July 26 - what could be done to improve things?

It's busy because it's less than an hour by train from London!

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Japanese design and quality control. But isn't it the Italian quality control at former Ansaldobreda? The company that had to buy back high speed trains from the Dutch railways because they didn't work.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Different train planning staff altering different weeks, and one hasn't finished other alterations in their week yet? That's my guess.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Yes, it is because of the dry weather. 'Soil Moisture Deficit' is the technical term for it apparently. Those familiar with the area will already know, but for anyone else reading, the line out to Kings Lynn sits on peat soil which can shink and degrade during long periods of dry weather, making...

Thameslink core broken - 13th July 26 - what could be done to improve things?

With regards to Letchworth, I was thinking of a slewing of the Down line, and one or two of the Arrival/Departure / Reception lines being placed between the two running lines (rather than on the down side as now), perhaps (after room to hold a 12 car train) crossing the down line to reach the...

Thameslink core broken - 13th July 26 - what could be done to improve things?

I agree about Royston. Maybe alterations at Letchworth should be a consideration too. I don't see any issue at Metropolitan Junction. What problems do you see here? There is facility to turn a southbound train back northbound in either through platform at Blackfriars, but obviously would...

This is also correct. I dont know how often taxis are used here, given the relatively short distances involved.

Thameslink core broken - 13th July 26 - what could be done to improve things?

The point I was making is that "binning off" the Cambridge Brightons makes a certain degree of sense when there are limited alternatives for that service group. You are right of course that with the Peterborough Horshams, that intermediate stops are often themselves "binned off" to aid service...

Thameslink core broken - 13th July 26 - what could be done to improve things?

Cambridge Brightons already use the Quarry Line and have to share Hitchin to Cambridge with stopping services, which they can end up stuck behind thwarting any catching up of time, so are limited with how much time they can recover. They also have short turnarounds especially at the Cambridge...

    2026 Pay Award

"Who still want more"? I thought it was out to a referendum and the votes need to be returned and counted? Or are those members not allowed a vote or a rep with a seat at the negotiating table now? Your entire stance is based on the idea that TSSA is fighting for more money, when what you...

    GTR Summer Holiday Cancellations

It's due to "lower passenger demand" which is bizarrely the only part not redacted about Fridays in Appendix E ! They are looking at a Saturday service for Fridays but may still need to accomodate school and college traffic, as well as making sure trains start as early as other weekdays.

Great British Railways - First Train in New Livery

They aren't quite the same. The side cab door on 387s (and the other units with a corridor on the front) is further back than on the units with no corridor (170s, 357s). This might be a factor that has caused a shift in the application, either deliberately or not!

Conwy Valley Line - Time to say good bye?

I think it has been somewhat overlooked that railway infrastructure, such as bridges, tunnels, cuttings and embankments, still need a certain degree of maintenance even after a line has closed. This is then a cost for no service whatsoever. It be better 'value for money' to keep the service...

Should trains have CCTV fitted to monitor what’s happening in the cab?

I have seen online, via a phone pointing at a computer monitor playing footage from a pan camera, of a pantograph ripping down the overheads mere hours after the event. The USA media loves footage of bus drivers and train drivers (Washington Metro springs to mind) making mistakes and plastering...

Rare for TSSA to call a strike. They were jokingly referred when I was on an induction to a TOC as 'Too Scared to Say Anything'!

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I don't know if it will actually happen, but apparently 70 minute turnarounds at King Lynn are being 'explored' as an option for the May 2027 timetable.
