Least popular journeys made between two stations served by a direct train? Based on tickets sold?

I bought a day return from Malvern Link to Kingham on a direct train yesterday. The booking clerk commented that they didn't sell many of those. This got me thinking, which might be the least popular journeys between two stations served by a direct train? I mean tickets sold specifically between...

    Geolocalisation de trains SNCF

This website allows you to do a map search to see which trains are running on SNCF at any given moment. Once the train is clicked the route is shown on the map. All very interesting, but tonight intercities de nuit 5792 Briancon dep 2003 to Paris Austerlitz is routed on the map to run on the LGV...

Evaluating the risks: is it safer for key workers to travel by car, than by train?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/lner-considering-requiring-passengers-to-check-in-before-travel.208949/page-5#post-4764611 1599806497 I'd love to use the train and certainly dont want to lose them, but at the end of the day ( as a key worker) I'm no good to...

Trivia: Mainline stretches with most foot and level crossings

With apologies to the thread on long stretches without level crossings, this got me thinking about which stretches of UK mainline railway have the most foot and/or level crossings? This includes occupation crossings. The Gloucester to Bristol route has a dense stretch north of Cam and Dursley if...

    Class 33 diesels Birmingham

If this should be on a different thread please redirect. Does anyone have details of class 33 haulage in the Birmingham area in the 70s and 80s? I recall travelling from Reading to New St in December 1981, stuck sitting in the guards van (BSK) on top of masses of luggage, discussing the class 33...

Mk1 restaurant cars on the main line

Excluding the present charter sets used for railtours does anyone know when the last Mk1 restuarant cars (RB, RU, RF etc) ran on a scheduled service?

Last steam service over the Kidderminster to Stourbridge line

I clearly recall watching steam trains at Hagley when I was very young. I'm pretty sure they were coal trains which ran to and from Stourport power station. Passenger services were all dmus. Does anyone have details of the last scheduled steam goods workings on that line? I know Stourbridge shed...

Can "conventional" trains run on the SNCF high speed lines network?

I'm well aware TGVs are often diverted to run on conventional SNCF lines, but can "conventional" trains such as loco hauled IC run on the high speed network? Last year I thought some Bordeaux to Marseille intercity trains were due to call at Montpellier Sud de France but can see none at the...

Use of heritage compartment stock on the mainline? Is there enough?

If Covid19 is here for a while wouldn't it be an idea to run some trips on the mainline formed only of compartment stock? With heritage operators like the SVR commencing operations booking out entire compartments the need to wear masks on board may be limited to corridors and toilets. That...

    Belfort to Paris 2020

I've been watching some great drivers eye view videos from France during the lockdown. There's a few showing loco haulage from Belfort to Paris via Troyes in 2017 eg: Does anyone know what stock is currently used for the long distance services on this route? Are there any loco hauled services...

    Long distance heritage dmu journeys

Does anyone else recall that, back in the BR days of regular loco-haulage there were some regular summer-only long distance dmu diagrams? One example was the Scarborough to Leicester train via Beverley and Sheffield: 3x3car Suburban Units, corridor connected with wc in centre carriage. I was...

Switzerland travel to/from Italy, France or Germany

Does anyone know whether cross-border rail routes into/out of Switzerland are currently 11th March subject to border passenger checks (similar to those between Italy and Austria before all services ceased)? If so what's the average delay to the train? Also is the Tirano to Chur service suspended...

    SNCF strikes latest

Not sure if there's a thread covering this generally? My son travelled Geneva to Lyon yesterday 13/12/2019, trains replaced by bus service, not a usual SNCF bus. Onward to St Etienne was possible by train but on the Lyon to St Etienne route it appears to be peak hours running only on weekdays.

    Marseille to Lyon TER trains

With my plans to take IC Narbonne to Arles in disarray I'm hiring a car to Avignon before resuming my trip to Lyon. I'm very keen to get the loco hauled TER service but have noted some units on YouTube videos. Does anyone know which weekday services to avoid? I've got a choice of TER17716 or...

    Lyon to Geneva weekday services

I'm travelling from Lyon to Geneva Airport on Thursday 31st October arriving by 1500hrs. My son's travelled this route a lot and reckons the two-hourly 0824, 1024, 1224 etc from Lyon are all booked for loco haulage but I could swear the 1024 is often a unit. Could anyone point me to the loco...

Cerbère to Avignon loco hauled TER

In May this year I saw some loco hauled TERs on this route, unfortunately I was riding an EMU at the time. Does anyone have access to the loco hauled diagrams so I can plan my journey from Perpignan to Avignon on these TERs? (I appreciate there's loco hauled intercities too from Narbonne to...

    Barcelona to Lyon direct trains

I'm planning a trip to Perpignan this autumn. There are some through Barcelona to Lyon trains which call at Perpignan. Oui. Sncf is currently selling Barcelona to Lyon advance singles for €29 on the website: bargain! But it charges €79 to board the same train at Perpignan to go to Lyon. Is it...

Perpignan to Barcelona via coastal route Port Bou

I'm hoping to stay near Cerbère for a few days at the end of October and was thinking of doing a trip into Spain (Girona). However there appear to be no afternoon or evening trains on the Barcelona to Port Bou route on weekdays. Does anyone know why? Engineering works? Seems odd you can go south...

    SNCF Béziers to Neussargues

Does anyone know what's happening with this route for the summer? SNCF and Bahn both indicating bus only north of Millau to Neussargues. But no TER or IC timetables yet published and no advance notice of closure or major engineering works on the websites. Looks like Nîmes to Clermont Ferrand is...

    Loco haulage Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

I'm travelling to Lyon and St Etienne in early May then travelling a circuit via Grenoble, Veynes-Devoluy, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Béziers, Neussargues, Clermont-Ferrand, Roanne and back. I'm hoping for loco haulage IC trains from Marseille to Béziers and Clermont to Vichy, but are there any...
