Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson - yet another assistance failure

In some locations for some TOCs the guard will check/dispose the train but I'd be surprised if that was the case at King's Cross. Where I am the guard does it at certain locations but in most it's the platform staff's job. On the other hand though, checking that passenger assistance has...

Heart of Wales Line Closed 27.08.24

No injuries, one passenger with dog escorted back to the station by the traincrew, investigations ongoing is probably the summary!

    Disruptive Passengers Procedure.

I think that neatly sums up the problem with the UK at the minute - it is accepted that unpleasant people will be unpleasant, and that there may be consequences to taking any action in regards to maintaining societal norms like not being an unpleasant, aggressive scrote to attempt to get your...

Hydrokinetic DMUs - can you wheelspin them past 2nd?

You can certainly spin 15x up. They're particularly prone to it with their single power bogie per car, particularly 158s, though it does generate transmission faults if they slip too long - 153s would go for so long then get a latched on transmission fault that needed a fitter to clear it though...

Bikes on trains - do I have priority over somebody sat in the bike storage area?

Ask the person to move. The flip up seats are to be used when the bike space is not required.

    Hope Valley Capacity Scheme updates

Earles isn't that curious, I think the conclusion was that coming up with an alternative efficient means of controlling the exchange sidings is rather difficult so they may as well leave it as is, given it works quite well.

Wrong operator after cancelled train - penalty fare rights

For what it's worth as you are well aware I agree with you, at least in general terms - however to pose the usual question: "I am a lying chancer. I have boarded a train at Manchester Piccadilly 15 minutes before my scheduled time with a different operator. I have asked nobody if I can board...

Wrong operator after cancelled train - penalty fare rights

Endorsing a platform full of people to travel on a different operator without them having agreed ticket acceptance would go down very badly with the management at some TOCs. We receive periodical emails saying that ticket acceptance is not permitted to be agreed locally and must be done through...

Wrong operator after cancelled train - penalty fare rights

Actually the station staff were wrong. The guard could have, I suppose, used the evidence available to them to come to a balanced judgement - but if the station staff have declared it to be fine without providing an endorsement to the ticket then they are the start of the problem. It is an...

Old level crossings/ manually operated gates

2 gate boxes between Melton Mowbray and Whissendine (Wyfordby and Wymondham) and Uffington which is a signalbox with gates between Stamford and Peterborough. I don't think any are particularly easy to get to for a casual visitor though

    EMR Catering Trolley Guard's Signature

It is. There have been things like train reports, journals and so on since the year dot and I have absolutely no idea why such mundanities as the guard signing a colleague's piece of paper would be of any interest to anyone, but I suppose we are all different.

    EMR Catering Trolley Guard's Signature

It is what it seems, the guard signs the paperwork to confirm the trolley was on board the train. They can also sign other issues on the hosts report (unable to go through due to overcrowding etc) or for free issues.

ASLEF - LNER drivers to strike every Sat & Sun for 3 months from 31 Aug - Now called off

Nah, they're still there, just called Duty Train Crew Managers. They do the on the day resourcing for the regional routes, they sit behind a window at Nottingham, manage the notice cases etc. The Intercity Derby Resource Centre Managers who do the same in terms of allocations of traincrew cover...

ASLEF - LNER drivers to strike every Sat & Sun for 3 months from 31 Aug - Now called off

It's the Duty Resource Centre Manager/Duty Train Crew Manager role in question. We've had both drivers and guards deputise in those roles over the years.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I've certainly carried chunks of point machines and signals for NR in an emergency  Amazing what you can fit in the middle cab of a 158 with some persuasion!

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

One thing that still happens at my TOC is the guard carrying internal paperwork, parcels, catering stock etc though not on the same scale

    Stupid questions from passengers

It shows no contempt at all. It is healthy to have a chat about it away from the front line to let off steam, thus allowing you to meet and greet people in a polite fashion, daft questions or not. Some of the questions *are* stupid. They can still be answered politely, and a giggle had later...

ASLEF - LNER drivers to strike every Sat & Sun for 3 months from 31 Aug - Now called off

That's quite interesting to hear, particularly coming from someone on the management side of the world!
