What factors have made on-train catering no longer viable in most cases?

Never worked that way for me - we've only ever had trollies on routes where cash ticket sales were the exception, even back in the day when you'd take a 4 figure sum the vast majority was on card! Standard practice at the end of your shift was to offer them whatever they wanted out of your float...

Nottingham Station: Access to platforms from footbridge

1600 ish this afternoon, apparently. For the avoidance of any doubt if there is a fire alarm the gates will unlock automatically and they've been locked over night for some time now, a year or two I think. The signs can be altered with the use of a hook on a pole and were specifically designed...

What factors have made on-train catering no longer viable in most cases?

To be fair catering went cashless several years ago on my TOC and apart from an occasional "cash is king" wally who decides to have a rant no one is interested in listening to I'm not aware it's ever made much difference. The only result is they don't get the products they want and the host...

does anybody know what rolling stock was used between Wilmslow (WML) and Manchester Airport (MIA)

That finished in about 2004 and didn't in any case stop at Wilmslow. The time period in question would be solely class 323s operated by Northern except the odd DMU peak working which I think was 142 or 150.

    Compartment Doors on Cross-Country trains

The 222s do have a sensor, albeit the door will still clobber you with reasonable force, it will then reopen itself.

Disabled passenger locked in at Oxenholme station

No, they're usually on a timer with not many exceptions. Delayed trains late at night have been risky in terms of station lighting for many years.

Staff entering the cab while train is moving

Guards are trained about only calling at an appropriate time but obviously you can't see into the cab and there might be something going on you aren't aware of. I have some red lines myself - I don't call trainee drivers at all unless it's urgent (though occasionally instructors will ask you to...

Gap beyond Nottingham for Liverpool-Norwich services (specifically 1L12)

ScotRail 158s were retrofitted with the class 170 passenger information system/public address etc so they can work their units in multiple. EMR 158s and 170s have two incompatible systems, so they can only work together with the front unit in use and the rear unit locked out. Odd things can...

Lewes station not served during bonfire night

They can't, any more than I can when I have to make ridiculous arrangements to allow me to get to work when they close off most of the roads in Nottingham once a year for the half marathon. It's once a year, such is life.

Nottingham Station: Access to platforms from footbridge

I believe it is planned to happen this afternoon after a delay fitting some equipment to the gates on the bridge or something along those lines.

Gap beyond Nottingham for Liverpool-Norwich services (specifically 1L12)

Not really, one of the biggest functional problems is depot capacity to look after a fleet with more vehicles than ever and some infrastructure issues at the depots also reducing capacity. Tyseley was always designed to be the central area super depot for DMUs and splitting up Central Trains...

Gap beyond Nottingham for Liverpool-Norwich services (specifically 1L12)

The main 6 car diagram at 0635 from Nottingham and then 0951 from Liverpool on a weekday is actually booked 2 trollies, one boards at Nottingham in one portion and the other at Sheffield in the other

Gap beyond Nottingham for Liverpool-Norwich services (specifically 1L12)

It was horrendous on the way to Liverpool as well leaving literally hundreds of passengers behind en route and it was the driver who refused to depart Man Picc.

    EMR Regional and Connect refurbishments

158847 has moved to Bristol to be done, a 170 (reputedly 501) will be going soon and the first 360 in the first month or two of 2025 I think.

Nottingham Station: Access to platforms from footbridge

I don't mean permanently having police officers on site to staff the barriers, probably bad wording on my part. What they *do* have is patrols working at Nottingham station (though they can obviously be deployed elsewhere) rather than just responding - IE they have a beat presence patrolling in...

Nottingham Station: Access to platforms from footbridge

As it happens Nottingham station is sufficiently sized to have permanent police patrols rather than just response and security too. I think the company have probably anticipated all this and want to make a strong point.

Nottingham Station: Access to platforms from footbridge

The problem is that most of the routes out of Nottingham depart into areas where should someone board and say "I can't/won't pay, what are you going to do about it?" (which is an every day occurrence out of that city, I had 3 on one train before Beeston the other day) there's sod all you can do...
