    Chiltern Inspectors

I commute 3 days a week from Banbury to Birmingham on Chiltern. I noticed a step change on Chiltern this year with regard to ticket checks - all changed in the new year. So at Banbury, barriers are in operation more often than not now. In the evenings, I can count on one hand how many times...

    Chiltern in 2024 post Evergreen

There was one peak fast southbound that ran non-stop Leamington to Marylebone. Going north from Banbury now, it seems there are more stops than before. It seems all trains now do Leamington, Warwick, Warwick Parkway, Dorridge, Solihull, Moor St./Snow Hill. I'm sure (though may be rose tinted...

    GA Smartcard question

Yes thanks. My issue was that you cannot use a senior railcard with a flexi-season ticket, so no longer economical viable.

    GA Smartcard question

Sorry, but no idea. To be honest, the information from Chiltern on how to use the Smartcard was at best, vague. It just seemed to suggest that I had to tap in.

    GA Smartcard question

I've recently got a Chiltern Smartcard, and have the same issues. Some days it works fine, then I get a random day where I get the red light. It terms of use, I think you have to tap in at the start of your journey, even if the barriers are open, as this is what downloads the ticket onto your...

    Are (Chiltern) Smartcards reliable?

Hi all. I've been using a Chiltern Smartcard to load my tickets for my regular commute. I used to download the tickets and use the barcode to get through the barrier, but always had that concern that my phone would fail, or we'd be in a mobile blackspot, when the train manager came round to...

When and why did tickets stop being issued on trains?

I can understand that. But I guess the question is how do you square the circle on having a rule that says you must buy a ticket before you board (where facilities exist), where people don't and on Monday the guard sells them a ticket, and Tuesday a Revenue Protection person gives them a...

When and why did tickets stop being issued on trains?

I think the one to add is to stop allowing people to buy tickets on board, and start charging penalty fares (and this includes allowing guards/train managers to issue PFs).

When and why did tickets stop being issued on trains?

I think this bit is the crux of it "In many cases these were done without changing the role of the guard/conductor, who continues to have the ability to sell tickets and, in some cases, has a financial incentive to do so. Which means someone doing the same thing on two different days will be...

    Birmingham Moor Street gate line

Yes agree - has made a big difference. I was surprised, once they started, how quickly they were installed and operational.

Chiltern Railways train stuck for 5 hours

Is this stored on the unit, or does it have to brought to site?

Chiltern Railways train stuck for 5 hours

So how did this work in reality... Southbound Chiltern train breaks down at Fenny Compton. Decision made at some point to evacuate the train, and move passengers to another train. Passengers moved onto a northbound train and taken to Leamington Spa. Does this mean passengers had to physically...

Tickets not checked - Chiltern smart card + railcard.

I commute from Banbury to Birmingham three times a week on a Chiltern only ADR. Since the new year, the level of onboard ticket checks has increased markedly (no issue with this at all). I used to buy e-tickets, but more recently I’ve been using a Chiltern Smartcard. These were checked as...

    Birmingham Moor Street gate line

And it looks like, as part of the upgrade, that they’ve finally added barcode scanners to all the gates.

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

Is this the May issue? I've just been to WH Smith's in central Birmingham, and they still have the April edition on display.

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

The last few times I've been on a Voyager, the catering host hides at one end of the train and no trolley ever appears. I can understand when busy, but I have heard the host saying on the tannoy to come and find them at the end of Coach F, even when the train was not busy. If they're going to...

    Midland Red buses

We went to the Black Country Living Museum today, for a birthday treat, and we had a ride on this beauty…. (photo is of Midland Red double-decker BMMO 6342HA) I fondly remember these from my youth, and was so pleased it was the traction for today. I also remember single decker Midland Red...

    Chiltern Smartcard - confused

Hi all. The company that I work for is increasing the number of days we must go into the office, so that now a Chiltern Flexi-Season Ticket will cost in. I've ordered and received my Chiltern Smartcard. I'm confused how it all works, and the Chiltern FAQs are a tad vague. Tomorrow I'm off to...
