Trivia: which railway station is furthest from the town it serves?

If you stretch the definition of “town it serves”, IBM Halt is currently 5 miles from the nearest IBM office. Lairg railway station is 1.6 miles from Lairg itself

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Specifically for the refurbs, I believe the new door interlock system on the refurb carriages means that only refurb power cars can be used with them.

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

A few months ago, there was some scuttlebutt that 385s could not do more than 2 trips around the Cathcart circle as the motors would overheat due to the frequent stopping pattern. Was this ever confirmed/disproven/mitigated?

Trivia: Lines that cross (over/under) 2 different motorways in quick succession

The stretch of railway from Glasgow Central to Cardonald briefly passes under the M77, and then the M8. If you are bit more loose with the idea of quick succession, the same route also passes under the M74 about a mile from the M77 crossing

Any idea what the issue was that caused them to be covered up?

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Is it common amongst other TOCs to take an HST out of service if one power fails? I understand the rational of if the second power car fails then the impact that would have on the network, but surely the fact an HST has 2 power car also allows for some flexibility?

TOPS Requests (including headcodes, allocations, traction, etc) [Instructions in Post 2]

Could someone please tell me what unit was running as 2I11 on Wednesday 11th September 2019, which was the 1815 Cathcart Circle service from Glasgow Central please? I know it was a 314, just interested to know what specific unit

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

With the Scottish Government announcing that all (practical) lines will be electrified by 2035, could the HSTs last until then, before being replaced with electric stock? 15 extra years seems a long time but presumably that gives plenty of time for the HSTs to repay for their refurbishment

    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

I took efficient electrification to mean that, for x miles of electrification, y amount of passenger journeys can be made electric. I would imagine then that EK electrification is top of the board, given how short the distance is that needs to be electrified, and how many journeys that would benefit

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Based purely on earlier postings in this thread, the MK3s that arrived at Wabtec have been in significantly worse structural condition than expected (and therefore estimated and costed for I assume). I wouldn’t surprise me if there is some financial back and forth if so many units require more...

Would standardised rolling stock make any sense these days?

Aside from the physical dimensions of rolling stock, I’m surprised there isn’t a part of ERTMS that dictates a common interface for trains to work in multiple together. I’m sure that approach would have all sorts of pitfalls, and there would be lots of manufacturer specific tech that could not...

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Saw 3 refurb HSTs today, but all 3 were sitting in depots. 1 in Eastfield, the other 2 at Haymarket. Do they often return to depots between diagrams, or are they just not likely to be running today?

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

I’ve finally taken a peak (ish) 385 through to Edinburgh today. Overall I’m very impressed now with the service these 385s offer. Acceleration out of Queen Street was far stronger than I was expecting (certainly makes a change since I mostly get a 385 around the Cathcart circle these days)...

Why was so much of suburban Glasgow electrified?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who was curious about this issue! There are a lot of great ideas thrown out here, which I have greatly enjoyed reading. After reading some of the posts here, I was inspired to actually dig out the BR modernisation plan...

Why was so much of suburban Glasgow electrified?

First of, I apologise if this has been asked before. I did search both the forums, and the internet generally, but nothing really came up. I recently saw a map of all railway lines in the U.K., and while I knew that the U.K. network was mostly non-electrified, I had no idea that Glasgow was a...

Presumably EK electrification would not happen without also doubling the track? Maybe that’s the reason for the prolonged silence

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

The 1806 Glasgow Central to Newton service was a 6 car 320 formation, which is the first time I’ve been aware of there being a 6 car service to Neilston that wasn’t made up of 314s. Is this a side effect of the 8 car 385 service having now started, or totally unrelated?

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

Just saw there that the 1745 Glasgow Central - Newton service was a 4 car 385. Stuck out because I saw the first class banner on the size of it. I wonder what the reason for the swap was?
