    Highland Mainline: Capacity Increase?

It appears Abellio is considering funding some passing loops on the Highland Mainline over and above what Network Rail was planning. The NR work has a budget of £120m up to 2019 according to this...

    HS2 in the press

It would cost the same as the combined bill for the Queensferry Crossing, M74 Completion, Borders Rail, M8 Completion and M80 Stepps to Haggs, five of the biggest schemes undertaken by Transport Scotland since it's inception 9 years ago. I'd still love to see it happen though.

    HS2 in the press

Scottish Government Ministers are very keen because they believe Scotland would become less attractive to investors if it missed out compared with those English regional cities which were connected. I don't know what the general population in Scotland think about HS2 but the few people I've...

    HS2 in the press

I don't think a cross border high speed line will be built or even started before the next referendum so it's probably a moot point.

    Passenger Journeys increase by 4.4%

I note 83m within Scotland. The 2003 Scottish Strategic Rail Study projected 98m by 2020 under a high resource scenario, which entailed building major infrastructure schemes such as EARL, GARL, Aberdeen Crossrail, both versions of Glasgow Crossrail (tunnel and City Union line); re-opening St...

Options for further rail reopenings in the Scottish Borders

The next 10 years will be about improving intercity connections. Then it'll be Glasgow's turn to get some serious rail investment to address the terminal capacity issue. 15-20 years for Hawick I reckon.

They are future proofing the redevelopment for a potential new platform. There's a buffer zone where no structural work will take place to allow for platform 8 to be built. Network Rail say this platform is not needed at the moment but may be required under certain projected growth scenarios.

    New Glasgow Queen Street images

Did Network Rail ever explain why they dropped the original plan for a footbridge running east / west above the platforms? It seemed like a good way to reduce congestion at the main gate lines.

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Just going back to the issue of increased journey times if diverting services via the City Union line to Queen St LL, I was reading SPT's Memorandum in support of the original GARL (as you do) and it stated the journey time to Central would be 15 mins compared with 21 mins for Queen St LL via...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Considering the huge cost of the new hospital (£850m) and the fact that it will employ 10,000 people it seems absurd that public transport provision will be decided solely by privately owned bus companies. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- If the Busby-EK section was double...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Would serving two terminals be a bad thing? I work 5 mins walk from Queen St and 15 mins from Central. I live in the south side but the long walk from Central puts me off so I get the bus instead. If there was a direct train to QS I'd switch to that.
