Latest time I can leave Hatch End / Hainault so not to miss my booked train at Paddington?

Tomorrow I've booked a train leaving London Paddington at 21.48. This is in fact the last train of the day that will get me back to my home station (Worcester Shrub Hill). Before that, I'll be buying a one-day Travelcard which I'll be using to visit both Hatch End and also Hainault, one place...

    Wild camping in Scotland

Does anybody know anywhere I could wild camp in, or very near to, Oban?

    Wild camping in Scotland

I insist on having a wash and also washing my hair every single day. To wash myself, Iwas thinking of popping into a toilet in Fort William's Wetherspoons, using the toilet on the train, or going in the sea if it's warm enough. Any better ideas regarding how I can have a wash each day when...

    Wild camping in Scotland

I've never seen Local Hero, but the views sound great. Actually, I've just Googled photos of Morar beach for the first time and it looks incredible.

    Wild camping in Scotland

I noticed you're in Evesham - I know it well and it's my favourite town in Worcestershire. Thanks for the reply. I was looking about camping near Morar, after I've visited Mallaig. Not sure if I could walk there from Mallaig, it's maybe 5 miles at a guess. I might time it so I get one of the...

Not being able to sleep on when travelling overnight

A few times a year, I travel on an overnight coach from Glasgow to Birmingham (departing 11pm, arriving 6am). I would really benefit from being able to get some sleep but I find it impossible. (Several reasons why - it's too noisy, too bumpy, not dark enough, I'm sat almost upright etc). I...

    Wild camping in Scotland

I've just noticed you might be located near Mallaig. Do you know of any suitable places to wild camp, say within a mile or two of Mallaig? Anywhere actually suitable in the town itself?

    Wild camping in Scotland

I'm going to the Mallaig area, so I'm best to go before June, to avoid the midges, apparently there are lots in that area?

    Wild camping in Scotland

[Q Thanks for the reply. I'm travelling around Scotland with a tent in April or May, for several nights. Have you actually done this yourself? I'd like to know if anybody ever bothers you or says anything? Also, I suppose it wouldn't be recommended that a tent is left up during the day when...

    Wild camping in Scotland

Thanks for the reply. To be honest, it's riskier than I thought! About camping on a beach: That's a good idea. I'd probably choose a sandy beach though. Obviously I'll have to make sure the tide won't come in, I'd be sensible about it. Is that definitely allowed, camping on beaches? If so, would...

Looking for cheapest possible ticket from Glasgow to Mallaig

Thanks for the reply. I've used the National Rail cheapest fare finder a few times. I was wondering whether there's any similar website capable of searching for the cheapest fare over the course of a week or a month (instead of having to use the cheapest fare finder, which I think only searches...

    Wild camping in Scotland

There's a rule where anybody has the right to put up a tent and camp for free in Scotland, providing the land is unenclosed and it's not in the Loch Lomond area. I haven't done wild camping in Scotland before, but I'm seriously considering it for this year. Can somebody please clarify how this...

Looking for cheapest possible ticket from Glasgow to Mallaig

There's a feature on the Virgin Trains and also the Scotrail websites where it lets me see many possible prices of a ticket from A to B. I see there's a possibility of an advance purchase single priced at just £5 between Glasgow and Mallaig. But I've searched well into April and May and I can...

Bell at Worcester Foregate Street station

Thanks. That's the perfect answer to my question. So, how unusual is the bi-directional track layout? How many other stations, if any, have the same sort of layout?

Bell at Worcester Foregate Street station

I'm not sure exactly, but it's like an old-style traditional bell sound. It rings for maybe 2 seconds or so.

Bell at Worcester Foregate Street station

When waiting for a train at Worcester Foregate Street station, there's a bell which sounds approximately a minute or so before a train arrives at the station. I don't remember hearing a bell similar to this elsewhere. Does anybody else know of a bell similar to this at any other station...

Breaking the "& connections" part of an advance purchase ticket

The reason I'm asking this is I'm travelling from Birmingham and want to go to Colne but I want about an hour in Accrington. I suppose the best thing to do is buy an advance purchase ticket Birmingham to Preston and then a single from Preston to Colne. Or, maybe an advance purchase Birmingham to...

Breaking the "& connections" part of an advance purchase ticket

You mean get the train that goes from Preston to York, get off at Accrington and then get the all-stops train from Accrington to Colne? Is the "accessing station facilities" idea a genuine reason to then stop at Accrington? Wouldn't they just say I could have accessed the facilities at Preston?

Breaking the "& connections" part of an advance purchase ticket

Say I buy an advance purchase ticket from Birmingham to Colne and the ticket says "Virgin Trains & connections". The ticket has just one booked train journey printed on it, Birmingham New Street to Preston, and I know I must use that booked train. But, regarding the Preston to Colne part of the...

Great British Railway Journeys - New Series?

I want to go and see him deliver one of his talks. Honestly, is he a good speaker? Also, if I'm only really interested in seeing him talk about his travels/railways, would I likely find his political talking boring?
