Four hour line block at March (Cambridgeshire)

A particularly poor event - took ages to find a rescue loco then when it got there it wasn't needed! Huge delays to trapped trains and a large number of others cancelled. It's odd/frustrating that so much stock these days is hauled to storage with barrier wagons, etc., but one of the few that...

Polar Express to operate from Euston, Christmas 2024

Maybe but they don't leave from a ghastly semi-underground terminus and wander through grim suburbs to a siding in an industrial estate, and return. With GWR using Euston next year, no doubt this won't be repeated then.

    GWR 'Turbo' Headcodes Displayed

Quite - so take the large-ish number out and make the destination element bigger and clearer. I cannot understand why UK trains, if they have a mandatory destination indicator, can't have better and clearer ones - there has been a long string of awful ones (442s, 458s, 700 series, etc.). Just...

    Class 175s to GWR

Yes, I seem to remember a post like that, but I couldn't find it either and wondered if it was my wishful thinking!

    Class 175s to GWR

Thanks. I am wondering if the extra stock will not only relieve the west's issues, but eliminate 2 car workings on the NDL (my line) by sending any stock (back) to Reading. 1727981467 Yes - it's looking grim around there at the moment. A Norwich train is shown as 266L (and has been cancelled...

    Class 175s to GWR

Does GWR make a net gain of stock with their acquisition of the 175s, or are other units to be moved on/scrapped as part of the cascade?

    GWR 'Turbo' Headcodes Displayed

They are indeed, but that has been a universal thing for a century or more. On the railway, although headcodes used to be common, they are no longer, and train destination indicators are universally abysmal anyway these days compared with buses.

That could be true. It will just remain a useless quirk, I imagine. That's correct. A nostalgic shot!

I see various numerical codes on the NDL (my local route).

    'Buffed' barriers at LU stations

Indeed - I can only assume another word was intended! 1727891368 Yes. My late father was an AFC specialist who worked on the Underground Ticketing System, then with WCL on various aspects of the system. It is impossible to have paddles which are 100% safe and 100% resistant to...

    GWR 'Turbo' Headcodes Displayed

So the passengers are left wondering what the headcode might mean (or is it just assumed that no-one looks at the indicators anyway)? Would the cost of the change be at all significant? It sounds like the situation therefore will remain the same until the Turbos are no more... It also begs...

    GWR 'Turbo' Headcodes Displayed

I can believe it but why are they still, pointlessly, being shown decades later?

A new day, a new cringe worthy network mascot (The turn of West Midlands Metro)

Grotesque - another example of 'the race to the bottom' for the railway. All this stuff just serves to reduce respect for the railway among people, which then probably leads to less awareness of the seriousness of the environment regarding safety, trespass, etc. 'Cheap and nasty' is the...

    GWR 'Turbo' Headcodes Displayed

They don't. I just think having route numbers where there is no reference to them in any passenger information is pointless. I grew up with SR route codes as second nature, but these days, they are simply so rare on the railway as to be useless if they are used (with no way for people to know...

    GWR 'Turbo' Headcodes Displayed

I think (not sure) this has been mentioned previously, but it is still occurring. Trains on my line (North Downs) often (not always, though) display headcodes such as '11', '13', etc., and I am unclear who these are supposed to be for. They are nothing to do with train ID codes, but seemingly...

Legal settlement opens up £25 million compensation pot for 1.4 mil South West Trains passengers

This advert pops up on RTT. The train shown, though, is apparently a Virgin one! This reminds me of the old financial mis-selling rubbish.

    Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

It may be me, but I can't see the origin of this thread - it seems to start on p1 in what feels like mid-thread discussions.

    Use of horns

Another slight tangent, but I wish there could be a proper return to two-tone horn soundings rather than the single tones which are supposedly deemed to be less disturbing, but which can far more easily be confused with road horns (thus reducing the safety aspect of train horns, which is their...
