Why does Japan use 20KV AC electrification instead of 25KV AC on their AC electrified classic lines?

No need to guess, @Prime586 already mentioned the Hokuriku Shinkansen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokuriku_Shinkansen

Why does Japan use 20KV AC electrification instead of 25KV AC on their AC electrified classic lines?

IIRC Japan (like France) began electrifying the national network at 1.5 kV DC and switched to AC in the 1950s. 1.5 kV is also the standard for most subway lines and local private railways in Japan.

Why does Japan use 20KV AC electrification instead of 25KV AC on their AC electrified classic lines?

If this map is correct, there are no places on the conventional network where trains cross from 50 Hz to 60 Hz. The lines that cross the frequency boundary were already electrified with 1.5 kV DC when AC electrification started...

Why does Japan use 20KV AC electrification instead of 25KV AC on their AC electrified classic lines?

That's not true. The Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka is 60 Hz throughout. IIRC the classic lines around Tokyo are 1.5kV DC.

[FI] The demise of open rail data in Finland

If we assume that Russia has spies in Finland spotting freight trains, they can work out which trains may be military cargo by seeing which trains they observed don't appear in the open data. As @Randomer said: If some non-military cargo trains are missing as well, the spies might be able to...

    Macedonia railway network.

Albania was never part of Yugoslava, and I presume that you wouldn't rate Slovenia, Croatia or Serbia on the same level as Macedonia.

A quarter of Bulgarian train services operated by private TOC from December

It wasn't an EU mandate when the Tories did it. EU policy requiring competititve tendering of subsisdised passenger services developed later, heavily influenced by the British example.

A quarter of Bulgarian train services operated by private TOC from December

The Desiros were all delivered before 2009 so BDZ will presumably retain ownership of all of them.

SETG announces the preservation of 455871

The announcement says that 5871 arrived at Strawberry Hill depot on 14th January. Is that a typo for 14th February?

SETG announces the preservation of 455871

And a 455 received in working order won't be an onerous "project" that takes time and resources away from the VEP. Restoration can wait until the VEP is completed.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

If a dummy dataset is used for testing, perhaps someone installed the wrong dataset (the one with shortened names) on the latest version after it had been tested. Then again, perhaps the PIS software is so badly designed that station names are hardcoded instead of being read from a separate...

VR never accepted the Dm11 units into service, because they were overweight and excessively noisy and the windows froze up during the winter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR_Class_Dm11 They were indeed sold to Cuba, where they were eventually converted into locomotive-hauled carriages using...
