Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Fastest time in the RPS archive for an up journey is 61 min 18 seconds for a class 222. The fastest logged HST time is 64 mins 11 seconds for a 2+8 HST. I used to catch a 2+6 ex GC set on a service to Nottingham in the morning but it stopped at Luton Airport, Bedford and all stations northbound...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

The fastest St Pancras to Leicester time logged so far aboard a Class 810 was 61 minutes 30 seconds. But a Class 222 run back in 2014 achieved a time of just under one hour.

    Class 175s to GWR

To be fair, from my single trip so far, the 3-car 175 I sampled between Truro and St Erth seemed to cope with passenger numbers. And its performance was barely slower than a short HST. Cornish main line speed limits of no more than 70mph don't require huge amounts of power. I imagine the...

    Class 175s to GWR

That seems a serious design flaw. How often did that scenario happen when running for TFW?

    Class 175s to GWR

I sampled a 3-car 175 from Truro to St Erth. They seem a fair bit quicker off the mark than a 2+4 HST but going up a steep gradient the lack of power is evident where a HST easily hits 60mph. A 175 seems to be running out off puff at the top end of its engine rev range where it feels it needs...

Overspeeding incidents at Grantham South Junction - 25/2/25 & 26/9/25

There are two issues here. One is driver error and understanding how it happened. But with all the training in the world, driver error can occur for different reasons. My concern is that in this age of modern technology and safety systems, we have a situation where low speed limits at critical...

Overspeeding incidents at Grantham South Junction - 25/2/25 & 26/9/25

Class 801 0 to 60 mph in just over 40 seconds and 2140 feet or 0.40 miles.

Overspeeding incidents at Grantham South Junction - 25/2/25 & 26/9/25

Whatever the cause for the oversight by the driver, this incident illustrates why KVB and SCMT speed protection safety systems are installed on main lines in France and Italy. These systems are costly - hence why automatic train protection ATP was only installed on parts of the GWML. This...

Grantham South Junction line speed for diverging route should be increased

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/overspeeding-incidents-at-grantham-south-junction-25-2-25-26-9-25.284357/ Why do we have such a ridiculously low speed turnout in this location? Surely it should be replaced with one capable of handling trains at 50 to 60mph so...

    ScotRail HST operation 2026

So after several hours shut down, it restarts as if nothing has happened? How much information does the MTU engine disgnostic panel store? What hissy fits can the power car have that cause a shut down that is not logged by any control equipment?

    ScotRail HST operation 2026

Looks like a bad day for HST operation yesterday when both power cars on the 840 Glasgow to Aberdeen appear to have failed requiring a line block and passengers to be transferred to a Class 158 drawn alongside. Another 5-car HST set was brought in to tow the 'dead' set south. Must be rare for...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I'm not sure a failed Class 222 is 'happy' news for anyone because it causes delays and cancellation. EMR barely have enough 222's to run the diagrams not assigned to 810's while having enough spare to undergo the maintenance needed to prevent them failing.

    ScotRail HST operation 2026

My goodness. Stopping a train at Balmossie and Golf Street would be interesting with an HST. Deffo no room for error.

    ScotRail HST operation 2026

The 222's will have to be tested along the route. Even if the brakes are superior to other units, I wouldn't imagine agreed braking points would be changed. And that doesn't alter the unpredictability of areas of low adhesion where additional caution needs to be taken.

    ScotRail HST operation 2026

How long have the HSTs been serving Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Laurencekirk and Portlethen? It seems the timings are ambitious on some sections. Looking at Dundee to Arbroath stopping services even the 158 and 170s struggle to keep time. They don't have a HST ability to reach 100mph in under 3...

    Electric trains using unelectrified track

thinking about it, the BR setting would also set the speedo display to MPH rather than km/h - all the others are km/h. Class 395's also do the same for DC setting. While the 25kV position sets km/h for HS1

    Electric trains using unelectrified track

At Modane, Italian 3kV DC locos can raise their pantograph under the 1.5kV DC supply but the loco effectively only has half the power. Of course the panto is lowered through the transition section. Tri voltageTGV's switch from their 3kv DC pantographs to the 1.5kV DC pantographs after lowering...

    Electric trains using unelectrified track

I understand the selector also determined power consumption limits. For example the GV(Grande Vitesse / high speed) position allows the train to draw full power from the 25kV AC supply, whereas the BR setting limits the amount of power drawn by the train and affects acceleration. Similarly the F...

222 contract for Scotrail: updates (not speculation)

There must be a good reason why the 8:37 Saturday Edinburgh to Inverness HST is sent out behind a stopper as far as Dunblane. Probably because a path does not exist to send it out later and probably the platforms at Edinburgh need to be vacated for other services. If you send it out much...

    ScotRail HST operation 2026

I saw reservations in D, not too many though. B and C virtually fully reserved from Inverness southbound. i think Inverness regulars are aware that there are fewer services and some only formed by 3-car units which can be very cosy. So it wouldn't surprise me that people tend to reserve a seat...
