    Open access on WCML

That doesn't necessarily mean it would be again. Manchester Airport is pretty well connected by road, rail, metrolink and bus, so doesn't make a bad railhead if marketed correctly. A non-stop (but fairly slow, i.e. no faster than if it did have a few stops) Euston - Manchester Airport service...

    Mornington Crescent

You've played a move that's almost impossible to get out of without playing the controversial 'double Romford' from Pickering's last ruling, so Romford.

The proposed Northern Ireland to Scotland tunnel - it is now confirmed will not be built

Good to see much more sensible comments coming from the NI select committee than from number 10!

As are sailings to Arran, Bute, and Dunoon

The proposed Northern Ireland to Scotland tunnel - it is now confirmed will not be built

Since this clearly isn't working well for lorries at the moment, given the vast numbers being re-routed via Ireland-France direct ferry routes, why would it be any easier on a train?

The proposed Northern Ireland to Scotland tunnel - it is now confirmed will not be built

Why on earth would anyone (in particular Stena and P&O) want to move the ferry terminal back to Stranraer? The ferry service has benefited hugely from the shorter journey times and ability to use larger ships since moving down Loch Ryan. If there was a great desire to have direct rail - ship...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

No, I think the general consensus on here (from ladies, gentlemen and everyone in between) (obviously there are those who disagree) is that HS2 is very fit for purpose, serves far more of the country than implied by the limited initial network (due to trains running onwards to other...

The proposed Northern Ireland to Scotland tunnel - it is now confirmed will not be built

The Royal Navy don't exactly have the best record for not crashing into things with their subs in the northern Irish Sea. It only takes one dink...

East Coast Trains: What are your hopes, fears and predictions?

From (probably far too much for my own good) experience on a range of budget airlines, it is rare for the back 3/4 of the plane to have enough empty seats to make this regularly practical, and I have certainly seen enforcement of the premium seats up front. I suspect that they are also quite...

    Decarbonising Shipping

I agree completely. There probably isn't a more deserving place to send a limited supply of biofuel that shipping, given the total reliance of world trade on the sector and the probable impossibility of using something other than a liquid or gas based fuel for long distance shipping. As you say...

Remaining Class 365s leaving GN - What next for the 365s?

What is really interesting is that this appears to be the first 'Fat Controller' rolling stock change between TOCs since the old franchising model ended. In my opinion it is good to see the DfT (I presume) taking a sensible decision to make a small reduction in capacity on three lines in the...

    New Dawlish wall failing?

Yes, that sounds very much like the case I was taught at college. Even if it is fictitious, the law in it seems relatively sound, and so I suspect the same would apply to a train proceeding along a flooded line that was connected with the high seas and navigable by seagoing vessels! I remember...

    New Dawlish wall failing?

There was a bizarre court case a long time ago that said that the regulations for prevention of collisions at sea had priority over the highway code in a collision between a car and a boat on a ford. I wonder what the equivalent would be between a boat and a train!

    Decarbonising Shipping

The Hybrid Hurtigruten ships are more about moving pollution around - they charge the batteries at sea, and then run on batteries in very sensitive areas. Very good in its way, but not helpful for reducing carbon. A similar option is to charge the batteries in port from the grid. This works...

    New Dawlish wall failing?

I don't think you can describe it as failing. I can't believe it was ever planned to stop overtopping of spray or even waves - just to reduce their power, and so avoid damage to the line. Looking out my window, waves are pretty much rolling over Brixham Breakwater too at the moment - this coast...

    Decarbonising Shipping

Moving this interesting debate to a new thread to avoid being told off! Off topic, but I can't let that one go. Absolutely not! Cargo ship schedules are vitally important to keeping freight out of the air and in the sea, which is a vastly more efficient place to put it. Some cargoes can move...

CAF class 197 Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

I can't help but think that the only reason for the 197s is a political one to be able to say >50% of the trains will be built in Wales. Otherwise, why would they not have gone for a much simpler option of having all 231s for their regional fleet, perhaps with a few more Mk4 sets. They might...

    Possible HS2 Euston station de-scoping

OOC is certainly better where possible, but Curzon Street wouldn't be a bad shout for a very delayed train, if sending it south would cause more passenger disruption than it saved

    Possible HS2 Euston station de-scoping

Now that does sound very practical 1612977578 OOC plans do show escalators at two points on the platform, leading to a central concourse, meaning the escalators are positioned roughly at quarter points, so noone should need to walk more than 100m from the train door to the escalator.

    Possible HS2 Euston station de-scoping

I could be wrong, but I don't think it will be possible to sensibly reverse a train at Birmingham Interchange, as the through lines are between the two island platforms. I believe that it will be possible to reverse a train at OOC, as there are 6 platforms available there, hopefully the two...
