Should Avanti services continue north from Manchester Piccadilly?

I couldn't agree more. One of the really nice things about plan C in particular is it simplifies the rail network in Manchester so much, with nice regular times to the same station from each destination. Driving a token Pendolino through platforms 13/14 is ridiculous, even outside of the peak...

DFDS launch "brexit bypass" Rosslare-Dunkerque freight ferry route

The old services cater well to this market, the Irish Ferries (WB Yates) and Brittany Ferries (Pont Aven and Armorique) ships in particular are excellent, with proper cruise facilities. I used to work on the route and it was packed with tourists in the summer.

HS2: Will Old Oak work and what could be done to improve it?

I agree with the others, no reason why OOC won't work, but even if it doesn't, simply increasing all trains to a 2.5 or 3 minute dwell wouldn't muck up the timetable, and there are plenty of platforms to allow this.

    New Dawlish wall failing?

Again, though, I don't think that it is intended to do so. The entire coast from Salcombe to Lyme Regis has been feeling the same storms, with breakwaters overtopped all along, the Paignton - Torquay road closed and so forth. Trains managed to continue running along the up line for the...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

I would have thought most people from Chester would just change at Crewe to be honest. The one major improvement to the scheme I would have liked to see would be to add a connection to the camp hill line just outside Curzon Street, to allow HS2 trains from Leeds and Manchester to reverse at...

    Manchester Recovery Taskforce (timetable) consultation

I think messing around with different service patterns peak and off peak for an airport is really stupid - it would be very confusing for a passenger who got a direct train to the airport in the peak to find out when s/he lands in the off peak that there is no direct train. I really don't think...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

They will get better London services too, the released paths will allow an awful lot more trains from London to these stations, if anything MK will probably gain more than Birmingham from HS2.

DFDS launch "brexit bypass" Rosslare-Dunkerque freight ferry route

Almost all ferries are basically freight ferries with passengers being a small extra bonus - in the UK Brittany Ferries are apparently the exception being much more reliant on holiday traffic, and so most of their fleet is currently laid up. I think @craigybagel answered all your other...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

Stoke is getting direct services in the latest plan I've seen. I'll give you Wolverhampton.

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

And of those, Stockport, Oxenholme and Penrith will almost certainly have quicker journey times to London than at present, just with a change, leaving Coventry as the only place with any reason for complaint.

DFDS launch "brexit bypass" Rosslare-Dunkerque freight ferry route

Moving my reply here to be more on topic... Far from it. There are 5.5 ferries running from Ireland to Wales (2x Stena Holyhead, 1.5 X Irish Holyhead, 1x Irish Pembroke, 1x Stena Fishguard). To the continent there are now - 1.5 Irish Dublin-Cherbourg - 2 Stena Rosslare - Cherbourg - 3 DFDS...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

The issue with that is that the train would probably need to go through the tunnel half full, as presumably you couldn't load the domestic carriages with international passengers until Ashford, if at all. You'd also need to do some kind of security sweep through the domestic carriages before...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

But they would be sharing the same train with domestic passengers in your scenario, who presumably would not need to show their passports. It may be possible to have one end of the train and platform for international and one end for domestic, but that is starting to get very complicated...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

I don't think juxtaposed controls work as a solution to this. - happy to be proved wrong if you can describe how it happens. The problem with running something like this a few times a day is it would need to replace something else that would otherwise be running at a regular clockface timetable...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

But that would only allow international passengers to use it (i.e. no Sheffield - Birmingham or Leeds - Ashford journeys) unless we either join Schengen, or they come up with some incredibly complicated work around. It would also require international facilities (passport control & security) at...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

I love the idea of that calling pattern - The train now departing Manchester Piccadilly will call at Manchester Airport, Old Oak Common, Euston, Victoria, Clapham Junction, East Croydon, Sanderstead, Riddlesdown, Upper Warlingham, Woldingham, Oxted, Hurst Green, Lingfield, Dormans and East...

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

Well quite! For that kind of money you could provide pedo-cabs in perpetuity for every passenger!

The proposed Northern Ireland to Scotland tunnel - it is now confirmed will not be built

There's a thread in the other transport section. So far since December, DFDS have started a new daily sailing to Dunkirk, Stena have doubled capacity to Cherbourg, Brittany Ferries have opened up new routes to St Malo and Roscoff, as well as starting Cherbourg early, Cobelfret have added extra...

If it's a dirty word, why would they provide one?

Will HS2 be unfit for purpose and should Euston be a through station?

It's a lot of money to spend on future proofing. As I understand it, in many ways it is future proofed anyway -there is space available in Old Oak Common to connect to such a link if one was ever needed in the future. But really, as others have said, apart from the similarity in name, why...
