Open access debate - Christian Wolmar, Ian Yeowart and Jonathan Tyler

'Better places to stop'? Nuneaton is a town of nearly 100000 people! We currently have the worst service to London of any comparable town of a similar distance from London (e.g. Grantham, Newark, Kettering, Chippenham, Market Harborough etc etc). Despite that disadvantage, Nuneaton's growth in...

Open access debate - Christian Wolmar, Ian Yeowart and Jonathan Tyler

When challenged, Virgin blame the government, then the government blame Virgin and so it goes on and on. Both are at fault in my opinion, Virgin COULD have run more services, the government COULD have specified a decent service level. Something will happen to derail Alliance though. Things can...

Open access debate - Christian Wolmar, Ian Yeowart and Jonathan Tyler

We're all for Open Access operators on the West Coast. Well overdue to balance the bias against certain stations like Nuneaton from Virgin. I can't see why Alliance can't have the same impact as other operators on the East Coast such as Hull Trains and Grand Central have had in giving stations...

    2015 fare increases

Link Central points appear to be Fare rises are justified to reduce public subsidies Higher earning people get most advantage from 'lower' fares so increasing them has little impact on the poor On balance franchising has been good (IMO why does ANYONE call it privatisation as it is nothing of...

Which re-opening would have the best Business Case?

As far as I am aware there are only 2 current significant re-openings in delivery rather than 'pie in the sky' Borders Rail and East-West Rail. If the Business Cases have stacked up for these, what other re-openings make the most sense and why? Matlock to Buxton? Woodhead? A no-brainer...

    Polesworth

All excuses not to do anything. They managed to find a way to change the LM paths to accommodate faster services which meant all the times along the TV section were changed for that service. I am sure the timetable planners could come up with something, better to have a go than not do anything...

    Polesworth

What a ridiculous post! I thought this was supposed to be a pro-rail website! If someone can't work out how to include a single new stop in the current service without messing up the whole West Coast timetable then we may as well give up trying to improve anything!

Completely agree, I am going to raise this with the local councillors. For the investment of a new path and refurbishment of the platform, a town with a population of over 8000 could have a rail service again.

Why not 140mph operation for Pendolinos?

It sounds like there are loads of opportunities to bring down the journey times to stations north of Birmingham, just by sorting out the existing bottlenecks? Also given that most of the track south of Crewe is 4 track why not go ahead with 140mph operation on the fast lines as soon as possible...

    Polesworth

I remember back in the 90s the infrequent shuttle service between Stafford and Nuneaton using 153s and that for Polesworth, along with Atherstone, this was their only service. I am pretty sure that despite the poor service, both stations had a fair amount of usage. Since then of course...

Why not 140mph operation for Pendolinos?

I have been travelling quite a lot between Nuneaton and Glasgow over the last few weeks and it occurred to me that despite the faster journey times now using Pendo's there is a lot of scope for further improvements if slow sections like Colwich, Stafford, Norton Bridge, Crewe and Carstairs were...
