They came in when electrification was completed circa 1995. At the same time Skipton/Ilkley - Bradford was increased to half hourly, all of which was justified on much lower passenger numbers than now.

Leeds was substantially renumbered around 2000 as part of remodelling. This included the renumbering of platform W as platform 1 as well as the addition of what are now 2,3,16 and 17. Shipley was, I think, renumbered in the mid nineties as part of resignalling.

It is a very odd train. It is the successor to the 07:19 Leeds - Lancaster which ran until 2020. I'm not sure why that path hasn't been reused, my only thought is that the current service at least gives an arrival in Lancaster (by Interchange at Carnforth) before 0900, whereas the 07:19 didn't.

The odd thing is that Airedale and Wharfedale have both avoided changes during the pandemic (other than in the depths of lockdowns), so it's not obvious what is driving this change now.

What is more worrying is that realtime trains suggests that Bradford - Ilkley and Bradford - Skipton are reduced to an hourly service from May, from the current half hourly service.

Based on Open Train Times maps there is still a unit (331108) stuck in Crossflatts Station. Interestingly a 333 that was stuck between Skipton and Cononley has made it back to Skipton - I wonder how that was achieved since as far as I can tell the power has been off since the incident this morning.
