Indeed. Being careful to avoid going off thread, the point is that the HST "classics" seem likely to be with us for some considerable time to come. May as well get used to them.

That's been discussed in a fair amount of depth upthread - dispensations are relatively easily available.

I suspect the main focus at the moment will be getting the "classics" fully up and running just so there are services that run, and reducing overcrowding across the network. Those are the things that get the headlines in the mainstream press and bite with the politicians, who evidently don't...

Yeah, fair enough, I hadn't thought of that, it'll be needed to useful things so perhaps not much time to spare - as long as it is doing them, of course.

Mind you, 12-2pm on a weekday at Haymarket is hardly prime-time viewing. A cynic might suggest it's a decent effort to hide things, while still ticking a box somewhere saying a public viewing has been done.....

Given the state of things that's a very "courageous" decision by SR, in the same way that Jim Hacker was occasionally courageous. Still, I guess it proves that the refurbs are still the eventual goal to be aspired to.

Could they not carry on with just one power car? Speed being somewhat reduced, obviously. May be being naïve, but I thought that was a least part of the benefit of having two power cars.

Not sure if it's for this thread, but it would be great to have a real-time feed on what the SR HSTs are doing on a daily basis. As discussed up-thread, there's no reliable way of knowing due to all the substitutions. It would take some pre-planning, but I'd love to catch one on the HML.

And, for my part, thank you for your report. All things considered it looks near certain that HST reliability in the short to medium term (up to a year from now) will be well below what the previous DMUs provided, for a myriad of reasons. Looking on the up-side, things can only get better. It...
