My understanding of the earlier discussion is that, normally and all being well, the front power car does the hauling, while the rear one is effectively a power generator for the rest of the train.
That's why I'm wondering if the rear one can (or can't) be called into providing traction, if...
Is that the front power car failing? And, in that instance, can't the rear one be kicked in to take over?
This was discussed to a degree a couple of weeks ago, but I don't yet fully understand why, if one power car fails, the other one (assuming it's working of course) can't ensure the service...
Yes, not to mention the delay-repay issue. I've seen it be ca. 30 mins late leaving Edinburgh, but still arrive in Inverness on time. Not all HML of course, but the timetable is certainly generous to it.
Right o, thanks. I've certainly noticed the LNER has a rather "leisurely" timetable on the HML - it has to be quite late-running to be "officially" late according to the timetable. The SR HSTs won't have that luxury though I imagine.
Thanks. So, overall, the HSTs are going slower than they otherwise could.
Why can't the HSTs use the upper limits, then? I guess they have to be tested/approved to go faster and haven't been so?
Keep coming back to the same point here. The HSTs, in whatever form, are the foreseeable future on Intercity ScotRail. You can either sit/type moaning about it, or suck it up and try to make the best of the reality.

Possibly not, but are they more likely to achieve what you suggest, and we all want, on a 170 or 158 or an HST? Also, is answering a question with another question very progressive?
Guessing you're a glass-is-half-empty kind of person?
How can it be negative that more stock is coming? SR have been instructed to come up with a remedial plan. They have done that. I am glad to see that action is being taken, at last. Given the circumstances, it makes perfect sense to bring in...
Technical HST question - perhaps not for this thread in detail, if so apologies and send me away. Noticing the puff of diesel fumes from the rear power car in the above video, from where does the driving power come during normal HST operation? Mostly from front power car, mostly from rear power...
There's no point going on about that - this thread has been suspended at least twice and had numerous mod. interventions because of folks going off on rants about this and that, all in hindsight.
Fact is, it's happening (or not, as the case may be). Dreadfully managed project - yes of course...
A fine sight, thanks for posting. Even with all other things considered, as an HST enthusiast it warms the heart a just little that some of them will see out their days running in the beauty of the HML. A fitting retirement.
I suppose overall, yes, but - keeping on thread - the point about the SR HSTs is that the project has been so dreadfully poorly thought through and managed on all fronts that we are at the stage now that, I fear, the "hotchpotch" described by @47271 looks most likely for the foreseeable future.
A well scripted vision of what is to come, sadly. I suspect Abellio couldn't' care less now, they'll just be trying to minimise their losses until they can run away.
We'll never know but it would be interesting to find out how many HSTs didn't fail today. And how many 170/158s/others did. In the interests of objectivity.
I don't think anyone is arguing with you that it isn't a farce, nor that the "all-26-refurbs-by-Dec-2019" has any real likelihood of happening, nor that the problems aren't having an effect on day-to-day services and passenger experiences, nor that all this should be brushed under the carpet...
