Great points everyone, thanks.
Nothing new then! on my old line the embankment had problems in three places and because of that the line was eventually opened 6 years after originally planned.
Thanks,
Andy.
No, but I have only a list of 2nd class cheap day returns, and for this one it's listed as 11d, not 1/1 as per ticket.
The ticket you've posted here - is this an adult one? single or return please?
My thoughts about it being a souvenir also comes to mind. Thanks very much I will think on it...
I've seen another ticket for sale, and I need urgent help on this please!
This next ticket is dated 1957, it says it's a 3rd class ticket, and has L.M. & S. R on the top front of it.
Would BR still be using up LMS tickets nine years in?
There are no terms / conditions on the back only the...
I know this will sound a very basic question, but I have wondered about this for a while.
Here I will mention Martholme viaduct, it carried the line 65 feet above the river Calder, and high embankments had to meet it on both sides.
On the Western side of the viaduct embankments were being...
I agree, especially when you consider a steam loco could be expected to run for 40 years.
Take the steam engine I saw, 48218, built in 1942, scrapped early 1968, but had things been different you might have seen it in 1982 still going strong.
Glad someone else feels the same way as I do.
I did wonder about that, I have the precise distances along the line, it would depend on how accurately the original was drawn. If it is accurate, then we need a little maths here I think.
Thanks,
Andy.
Thanks as always to everyone who's replied to my other topics.
I have re-worked a gradients profile for my old branch line, however I cannot find information as to the height above sea level for the two junctions that connected it to the East Lancashire line.
Using Internet sites, I can get...
Interesting replies as always!
Yes, that might have been a strong reason to merge.
You can see from a business sense why they would want to do it, they seemed to have co-existed well on the whole. The L&Y never had a London link, but they had more or less cornered the L&Y region of the country...
I've been reading this topic but it's no longer open for replies and would like to ask something...
I have never really understood why after the 1921 Railways Act did the L&Y and the L&NW companies merge together just prior to becoming part of the LMS to form a new L&NW company?
Both companies...
Interesting...
The short section (2 miles) from Rose Grove station to Padiham opened 2 years before the rest of the line did. My book tells me even on the first passenger train, some people had tickets to Manchester. So either at change at Rose Grove or a reversal needed, and the same coming...
That's fantastic work Bevan you've done for me, many many thanks!
I've asked a couple of guys who are very interested in signalling and they all agree (as do the links provided) that Rose Grove West was indeed the zero point for the MP's.
It does beg another question though:
The links, OS...
Thanks, anything you can find I would be very grateful for.
I remember walking the track bed around 1981 / 2, I came across a quarter milepost just outside Great Harwood (western end). I can't remember what it measured but I think (but could be wrong) it had L&Y on it.
Glad you told me about that, the BR 1960 one says exactly the same.
A great question!
On probability I would guess no based on what both sectional appendix's state and given the old OS maps show the MP's counted from the eastern end.
Based on what you have both told me and spending time...
Hi and thanks for your replies on the other topics,
There is a similar thread about mileposts, and it is very interesting but this one is very specific so I thought it deserved a different thread.
I've kept looking at John Marshall's gradient profile of my old line (very sorry it's this one...
It just says "ONE" at the top left of it.
It's described as a "BTC(M)" ticket number 118 and has British Railways on the back.
I presume BTC stands for the British Transport Commission?
The "(M)" is shown at the bottom left of the ticket - presume that's means the London Midland Region...
The ticket does not mention a railway company on it, I can only assume (and I hate assuming) that it's a BR one. The destination / fare is definitely blank on this one.
I'm wondering now if at the end of regular passenger services along the line (2/12/1957 or shortly after) someone had the job...
