Given the times and the mores, the change I expect to see (but will not welcome) is that trolley ladies will be replaced by robots. Perhaps when the next generation of rolling stock comes in.
Personally, I would prefer the system on Russian trains - free hot water, bring your own mug and teabag.
Is there any hope of making Gadbrook a parkway station?
Basically an enormous, inexpensive and secure car park for people arriving for the first train of the day (vaguely 6:30am) to Crewe.
Of course if the parking and traffic at Crewe were at lot better this would not be needed.
So an alternative is to delete the HS2 terminus at Piccadilly entirely and build an HS2 through station at Victoria instead. Isn't this accomplished by digging 9 miles of tunnel instead of 8? A relatively small change for the huge benefit of having a through station.
Yes, Metrolink was built in 1991.
You would have to go back to the days of steam trains to find a time when the Northwich to Manchester journey took longer. Even first generation DMUs were faster than the modern service.
The solution of course would be to build the Mid-Cheshire Line to Airport...
Most valuable cargo ever to pass through Euston station, in the charge of a railway porter no less, was Cavity Magnetron No. 12 in August 1940. A priceless war secret at the time on its way to the US government and said to be the most important part of "the most valuable cargo ever to reach the...
Yes probably, but lots of people in the NorthWest would catch a morning flight out of Gatwick if it were convenient to reach in that way.
Maybe stop at Crewe, Birmingham, London (Kensington?) along the way.
An overnight train to Gatwick (and Brighton), leaving Liverpool around 11pm, arriving at Gatwick Airport early in the morning would attract more customers. Return train leaving Gatwick in the early afternoon.
Not sure what stops would be best, fine tune that as demand is discovered.
There is definitely a need for a station with a very big car park and good road connections in Cheshire for long distance travellers. Winsford is perhaps the only station that has space for expansion. Quad tracking through the upgraded Winsford station as well as increasing the car parking would...
Instead of not stopping at certain times the trains can stop for pick up only. Boarding, but not alighting, to be allowed at Lewes during the subject period. Better than not stopping at all.
Well said. It is not necessary to suspend all service; set down restrictions for the period would have been sufficient.
But there are people in society who want everything to be either prohibited or compulsory.
Such commuters would not go via Northwich and the abysmally slow Mid-Cheshire line though would they?
Instead changing at Sandbach or Crewe - whichever was quicker.
There is certainly an unmet need for a parkway station in Cheshire. But as well as plenty of room for a B-I-G car park it needs good, uncongested, road access. I don't think anywhere between Crewe and Chester meets those requirements.
I can image that a special excursion train might have some latitude that might not apply to an ordinary scheduled service.
Would a normally scheduled train be allowed to do such an unplanned stop and pick up?
Halton’s iconic new Mersey Gateway Bridge will open to traffic just after midnight on the morning of Saturday 14th October 2017.

The 1961 bridge will close for about a...
For quite a number of working people in the North Cheshire (including Widnes) and Mid-Cheshire areas a question is -
Q: How early can I get into London for a business meeting without losing a night's sleep, staying in a London hotel or setting the alarm for earlier than (for example) 4:30am...
Well it would be if there were a sufficient amount of parking at Hartford Station. Which there isn't.
As a practical matter folks drive to Crewe and park there nowadays.
In the same way people who presently drive to Runcorn station from South Liverpool will switch to Warrington when the 1961...
The Birmingham trains are indeed the only stoppers (for example at Hartford) as of today. MarkyT was proposing a different permanent way configuration and that would create new journey opportunities.
And yes, in response to the other poster, suitable replacement rolling stock would be required.
