Ticket from Liverpool Lime Street not valid at Liverpool South Parkway?

I find that they vary a lot. There's a guy at one of the local stations that I use occasionally who's very good, indeed seems very keen to find stuff out for you. But then you get ones like this pair who, as you say, seem pretty clueless and jobsworthy. 1778753815 One way I thought of...

Ticket from Liverpool Lime Street not valid at Liverpool South Parkway?

It wasn't an Advance, it was an Off-peak return. 1778753363 Except of course that if you need to catch a train and the staff are adamant that you can't go through the barrier, you're kind of stuffed, aren't you?

Ticket from Liverpool Lime Street not valid at Liverpool South Parkway?

Yes, it was the return half of a Euston-Liverpool ticket, ie from Liverpool to Euston. Ironically, I had no trouble at all getting through the barrier at South Parkway on the outward journey. I'm pretty certain they were Merseyrail.

Ticket from Liverpool Lime Street not valid at Liverpool South Parkway?

Not really a dispute, just a minor kerfuffle. Yesterday, I arrived at Liverpool South Parkway with the return half of an off-peak London Midland return from Liverpool Lime Lime Street to London Euston. The ticket gate refused to open when I put the ticket on the scanner. The two gate staff told...

Level crossings that would bring the greatest benefits if closed

That horrible acute-angle cross between Croydon Tramlink and Kent Gate Way where I came off my bike a few weeks ago and did my knees untold damage from which I'm only just recovering...

Screwed phone. Digital railcard. Big journey coming up.

I do feel for you. I had a similar situation a few months ago, but eventually my wife gave me one of her (many) spare phones and I was able to get up and running after a week or so. I must say, I wasn't impressed by the attitude of my bank (First Direct) when I asked them for advice on how to...

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

Got my iLink day card at the Tourist Information desk at Belfast International Airport this morning - the whole process took about 30 seconds. And I can vouch for the frequency of checks on the rail system - even while stood on the platform at Lisburn while waiting for the train to Portadown.

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

Unfortunately, I can't do that now as I'm travelling on Thursday. Well, I'll find out if the information desk is open and able to issue it when I get there, I suppose...

Northern Ireland Railways - Ranger/Rover equivalent for the network?

Is it possible to buy an iLink card at Belfast International Airport? The Translink website gives the impression that they can only be ordered for delivery by post.

“Extreme day trippers” on the rise

I recently turned what was going to be a two-day work trip from Gatwick to Dublin into two consecutive day return trips, owing to domestic circumstances. (The Missus was away and someone needed to put the chickens to bed for the night.) So that was two lots of stressful driving to and from the...

Trivia: Rail replacement bus/coach which is quicker than rail/metro system

I used one from Antrim to Belfast many moons ago that got to Belfast Central four minutes earlier than the scheduled train arrival. It was on a Sunday though.

Dealing with out-of-course events in isolated parts of the network before radios

Interesting how much reliance was placed on the railway phone system until the CSR era. Though that wouldn't have helped in the case of a long freight-only branch being operated effectively as an unsignalled siding. Unless perhaps they left the phone system in place somehow after the signals...

Dealing with out-of-course events in isolated parts of the network before radios

I was thinking more after it closed to all other traffic in 1964 and became effectively a 17.5 mile long siding with no signals. 1774139115 I guess radio telephones did exist then; I think you could, if you were wealthy enough, have one installed in your Rolls Royce, even in the 1970s. So I...

Dealing with out-of-course events in isolated parts of the network before radios

How would train crew be expected to contact signallers or control in the days before radios? Obviously on most lines there would be signals with telephones, but what about long freight-only branch lines with no signalling, such as the Amlwch line, which was 17.5 miles and effectively just a...

Should Covent Garden underground station be closed?

Doesn't the Ricoh Stadium station in Coventry get closed on matchdays because they're worried about supporters overwhelming the two-coach units they use on that line?

    Bangor (Wales) Platform 4

Some time in the 1970s, I remember it being used to platform a Holyhead-bound local DMU while a late-running loco-hauled train (probably from Euston) used platform 3 on the other side of the island. It had no number then; I think it was announced as 'the other side of platform 3'. I'm not sure...
