Take a virtual rail trip with Sydney trains.

Should add as well that anyone with a longing for Woodhead might find the Blue Mountains line a little comforting. Electrified at 1500vdc, with a ton of original 50s catenary well into the rusting process. Gosford to Berowra is pretty useless as a main line, but a glorious run if you don't...

Trivia: stations which seem small for the town/city they serve (UK/rest of Europe)

I don't disagree - Durham and Wakefield Westgate are both two platform stations serving intercity and local services also, but I think being side platforms helps. I think the issue with Halifax is that it is a cramped, single Island platform, one staircase up and down and hemmed in from...

Trivia: stations which seem small for the town/city they serve (UK/rest of Europe)

Halifax. Two cramped platforms for almost 2 million passengers and a town of approx 100'000.

First memories of a London terminus?

Kings Cross - arriving in 1985 on a day trip. First ever trip on a 125 from Wakefield Westgate. Didn't care about London but as a 9yo train nerd it was all about the journey. Kings Cross was noisy, smelly and I loved it.

    Polybulk wagons

Just to prove you can bring Woodhead into anything. Last train.

Which stations look poor compared with the settlement they serve?

Brisbane Central and Melbourne Flinders Street could be a lot better. Also, given Canberra is Australia's Capital city the station is an embarrassment.

Dismal Stations Which Give A Poor First Impression Of The Town They Serve

Halifax. Poky platform, messy trackbed off platform 1, disused platform and weeds opposite platform 2. Cramped entrance and exit. Pretty impressive townscape once you get out though.

    Railway Geography: Winners and Losers

Wakefield is a winner. It's a large council area - but served well enough by stations, Castleford, Pontefract etc). Other than the city proper is around the same size as Halifax/Rochdale/Lincoln etc. It benefits from being in the way between Leeds and Doncaster and being just big enough to...

West Riding train services in 1964 - a map

OOH - my Halifax heart is livid at what they've turned my home town station into. Love your map btw

Halifax revamp moves a step closer

Any improvement is to be welcomed, and any improvement with foot and transport access would be wonderful. From my reading it's very vague on the third platform, but from my strictly amateur understanding of station design, I would have though allowing a three platform station would future proof...

Trivia - Furthest you've seen someone carried beyond their intended stop

Back in student days - around 1995 - spent the day at a house party in London and got on a lateish evening train from Euston back to Bham New Street. Woken up by a remarkably kind conductor at Preston.

Halifax revamp moves a step closer

So even if the hire space at the southern end remains in private ownership, it is now possible that that majority of the platform could be adapted or brought back. There does seem to be a lack of clarity in various reports as to if it’s either needed or wanted.

Halifax revamp moves a step closer

Yes I did read this - who knows in this time of budgetary constraints, but it does seem like a good opportunity to bring the building back into railway use.

    Trivia: "unappreciated" Scenic Routes

Cowan to Gosford. Irritatingly slow but beautiful.

Least popular journeys made between two stations served by a direct train? Based on tickets sold?

Admittedly it's 23 years since I left, but I frequently did that trip despite the walk home being shorter.

Could an HST have worked Belfast-Dublin?

It's a fair point though that the XPT sets may have demonstrated a form of suitability. The re-gearing and lower power would easily have coped, although I can't imagine it would have been a cheap enough option. And, there is something depressing about XPT sets pootling about the NSW hinterland...

Trivia: Neglected railway stations in busy areas?

I find the empty trackbed (on both sides), expanse of platform and encroaching bushes make Halifax a candidate, even though its so much better than the 80s.

Don Coffey cab ride video discussion

His videos are excellent, and he also seems to be an absolute stickler for safety and propriety. As a rank amateur I've learned so much about rail operation and the why and how of all things railway. Thing is, he might be talking absolute nonsense for all I know but as I'm never likely to drive...

Trivia: Redundant railway infrastructure built post WW2

Oil sidings at Greetland Junction. Opened after the station closed in 1962. Seems as if some of the sidings are still rusting away but the rail connection is gone.

Halifax revamp moves a step closer

A lot about the plan is great, and I like how it fits into a bigger footprint from the station around the Minster, Piece Hall, Square Chapel, Library and up through Woolshops. It really is a good looking town. I'm with you on the platform - I don't understand how you wouldn't take the...
