I've recently learned about carriage washdowns used when labor wasn't available to do it by hand. And also that the Q1 0-6-0s could go through these.
Which has led to my curiosity; where there any automatic locomotive washdowns used when labor wasn't available to do this by hand?

I'm having trouble understanding what loading gauge means and how it works. I've read a couple of websites on it and looked at a railway book of mine that discusses it as clearances, and it's clear to me that I need it sadly dumbed down to the simplest explanation.
