Although most tickets now seem to be available to purchase (for say February), oddly enough no tickets seem to be available to or from Gloucester or Cheltenham.
Incidentally shrift* is one of those words in English that is hardly ever used except as part of an idiom.
*Absolution by a priest (I had to look this up even though I've used the idiom!)
Twenty years ago I travelled from St Petersburg to Guangzhou (Canton) by train. Via Mongolia it was 7 nights in sleepers in total. It was certainly an experience, but it's a long way! Fortunately I had the luxury of being able to take long breaks of journey at suitable places of interest.
If...
Happened to me too (a long time ago). It was an HSBC machine which dispensed £10 short. Disappointingly they didn't really believe me and tried to brush me off, but with some persistence they finally checked the machine, and it had a big discrepancy on it, so I did get a refund. Obviously I...
The one and only time that I think I have felt genuine fear while on a train! We made up around an hour of lost time by Plymouth if I remember rightly. Though I no longer have hair enough left to raise, I'm glad that safety has moved on since the 70s!
I don't know what the linespeed was then (I think it's 90 now), but I vividly recall hurtling down the bank behind a Peak headed for Plymouth in the mid to late 70s. We were running around 2 hours late and the driver was giving it everything. By the time we reached the top of Lickey, stood in...
I've had to do this a couple of times from Bromsgrove and have travelled both ways round. It varies as to which is quickest. Sometimes you can make a tight (unofficial) connection at New St head up to Smethwick Galton Bridge then change onto the Snow Hill lines, which shaves some time off...
Reinstating 4 track between Longbridge and Barnt Green (to allow additional fast services) would require the slow lines to be wired, which would I suppose be minor additional electrification, but I'm not sure what else would be necessary.
It was interesting to hear the views of a friend who had never previously used a train before when, sadly, I had to introduce him to rail travel because he needed cancer treatment in London. Considering how intolerant of bad service he was in general, I was surprised that he was pretty happy...
Won't everything that passes Lifford East also pass Bordesley Junction? It will be most (but not all) XC Manchester Piccadilly - South West services and some freight.
The stops are timetabled in ready for when the station is complete, but nothing is stopping there yet. I'd guess that it'll be a few more months before passenger services start.
On Real Time Trains the times and the station name will be shown in bold when the station has opened and services...
...or (continuing with hypotheticals) maybe Bromsgrove, Shrub Hill, Parkway might work?** Links Parkway to the Cross-City and Droitwich improving connection options, as well as giving extra links into Worcester city. Platform 1 at Bromsgrove could be used (it's currently under utilised, being...
I came across the remote gate monitoring for the first time at Luton Parkway platform 1 last week. It was very efficient, with an immediate response, a video screen for the passenger and a separate camera so they could see your ticket details. In fact I had to talk to the gateline staff...
Our family did quite a few of these from Birmingham in the 70s and they often picked up at Northfield in the days before Cross-City. It must have been the only time that you could see 200 people standing there on the old centre platform. Did any of the other excursions pick up at minor...
I *think* it works like this - the PLUS gives the Warwick add on, the main Daytripper ticket covers zones 1-5. If you then look at the rail zones map Rugeley is off in its own unnumbered zone, which has a footnote saying that ntrain tickets for zone 5 are also valid for the lump that extends...
I don't see the 145 services that divert to South Bromsgrove High School that frequently, so it may have been unusual, but last time I was on the north bound it was standing from the school. However I did happen to see the southbound one from the school yesterday and that was busy but had seats...
