    Scarborough; TPEx reliability

I was on the 1102 from Thornaby to Manc Airport, mostly on time until a crawl into and out of York which left us stuck behind the Selby to Leeds stopper. Arrived into a rammed platform 16 at Leeds about twenty minutes late - glad I was getting off there! Just about made the northern 1251 direct...

    Preston to Thornaby (or Stockton)

Thanks all. (I lived previously in Leeds for 8 years and travelled west maybe ten times more than east/Northeast due to these fares!)

    Preston to Thornaby (or Stockton)

Hi, I'm travelling tomorrow, returning Thursday. Most likely to be travelling off-peak but I'm planning on using Northern's direct Preston to Leeds on the outbound which is unrestricted (via Burnley, to be purchased through to York.) The main problem seems to be then northbound from York in...

    Cambrian chaos

I used to have at least annual visits back to my uni town of Aberystwyth, but haven't been for a while - the train journey being a main factor.

Trivia: Minor stations on the approach to major stations

It's been a while since I heard the idea that should be renamed Salford Spinningfields...

    Scarborough; TPEx reliability

Surely if Scarborough has an hourly service, TPE should be always running that; if time then needs to be made up then do that later at Huddersfield or Stalybridge with more options west from there. Too simplistic?

If you could create any direct services which currently don’t run which would you choose?

A sleeper carriage to sit in Preston for boarding from 9pm to get picked up at the morning hour the whole unit passes through.

Conflicting advice on train and on platform

Northbound West coast trains could only go as far as Lancaster yesterday. Fortunately I was making a simple Wigan NW to Preston trip. On Wigan platform, those for Glasgow (or Edinburgh) were advised to travel instead to Manchester to continue their journey from there. On board, advice was to...

Its a bad day for overheads (14/06)

Amusing that they were advising passengers on to the two-carriage Preston to Leeds in order to continue their journey north. Even the passengers saw the funny side and laughed mockingly at the announcement.

    Northern short train during closure

I think we're just going to have to get used to it. At least you don't live in Staveley.

Best place for a pint within view of a railway station/line?

I was sat in there about 15 years ago and saw the train derail in front of me!

Northern's Problems in the North West

I'm still trying to figure out the actual running northern Preston to Blackpool timetable. Or is it just a case of aiming for the few Virgin services each day to be sure of not being forced on to a bus?

Best place for a pint within view of a railway station/line?

The Wharf in Castlefield usually gets a deserved mention, train line, metrolink and two canals

Northern's Problems in the North West

Seemingly not, but I am keeping an eye as fancy a trip to St Anne's tomorrow.

What’s the the weirdest, niftiest and cutest train journey you’ve ridden on

As a student I remember being on the last train back to Aberystwyth with about 10 friends and thinking because of that I could have a sleep. I woke up arriving into Borth. I thought great, I've only got 10 mins to go...until I realised we'd arrived into Borth the wrong way and the train was...

Is 08:57 south out of Middlesbrough off-peak?

I knew there were cheaper fares, eg via Burnley, but throwing a bunch of receipts to finance departments tends to invite questions. Fair play to the railway industry for their cynicism in realising this but it doesn't provide goodwill. A 'more flexible fare' in this instance has additional...

Barrier acceptance issue at Manchester Vic

Maybe they thought it would be quicker to walk? :D
