    Leeds station improvement updates

One really big improvement that would be appreciated is escalators that actually work! The up ones at the southern entrance have been out of order for nearly a fortnight now with no sign of anyone actually working on them. Instead they've just been cordened off, forcing passengers to use either...

Avanti take needless announcements to a new level

We can start all the threads we like about excessive announcements on here but it's never going to make any difference, is it? I've been out on LNER and Northern trains today and in both cases we had the automated announcement after virtually every station followed by the Train Manager repeating...

The cost of living agenda - how should the railway contribute ?

Conversely those of us who don't drive subsidise wealthy car owners as our taxes are used to pay for road maintenance and upgrades.

The cost of living agenda - how should the railway contribute ?

Other - once GBR is launched there should be free travel for everyone who works on the railway to compensate for the low pay and poor conditions they often have to put up with, regardless of whether they're safeguarded or not.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Come to think of it do Argos stores still exist? Round our way they're little more than a tiny alcove at the back of Sainsbury's.

    Beware of air conditioner scams

I wouldn't touch Ali Express with a bargepole, they're just as dodgy as the Facebook scammers! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp8714286dpo

    World Cup 2026

Well once we'd got the tedious group stage out of the way I thought it was a very enjoyable World Cup. There were some very entertaining knock out games and, playing Devil's Advocate here, I thought Argentina (up until the final at least) the most entertaining team to watch insofar as that you...

Trivia : shortest and longest time between stations

In terms of mainline services, I'll say Garforth to East Garforth, a mere 0.521 miles according to Route Plotter.

    World Cup 2026

I believe "blocked shots" are also included in the total number of shots, hence the disparity.

Typical England, rubbish when it really matters, brilliant when it doesn't!

Adjusting recorded announcements to station specifics?

Well change the law then! Has there ever been an instance of a passenger being hit by a fast train passing through a terminus station?

£33.4 million for next batch of ticket gates

I agree, ticket gates are an absolute nuisance and inconvenience honest fare paying passengers just to stop the tiny, tiny minority who fare dodge. Many's the time I've had 20-30 minutes to change trains and thought about nipping out for a drink or to check out the concourse shops then had...

    World Cup 2026

And this English "gallant losers" mentality is why we'll never win a World Cup in my lifetime. If your objective is to win the World Cup, which England's surely must have been, then going out in the semi finals is just as bad as going out in the group stages - it's failure whichever way you look...

Adjusting recorded announcements to station specifics?

Or just turn off the announcements altogether at small terminus stations like Matlock. What information do passengers need to know? All the trains are going the same way and to the same destinations.

Electric bikes - such a missed opportunity

A bugbear of mine is that the rail industry has been very slow to adapt to the increase in the number of cyclists that the e-bike revolution has brought. 10-15 years ago when i was taking my road bike on trains in Northern England, most times I was the only person bringing a bike on the train...

Electric bikes - such a missed opportunity

Not so, you're forgetting that even experienced cyclists, as they get older, become a little lazier and more unfit, at which point an electric bike becomes and increasingly attractive option. Up until a few years ago I used to enjoy a 50 mile bike ride most Saturdays, but when I reached my...

Heat related disruption 8 July 2026 onwards

No need for hyperbole, trains between Derby and Sheffield didn't collapse, there were just a few delays. I caught the 1730 from Derby to Sheffield which was delayed around 40 minutes but still made it to Sheffield, as did most of the following XC and EMR services.

Strangely TPE's 185s are running over the same route with no overheating issues.

Heat related disruption 8 July 2026 onwards

Northern are at it again, using the severe seasonal weather as an excuse to reduce services on a number of routes tomorrow. https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/travel/hot-weather-travel-advice-july-10 I'm particularly miffed at the Sheffield - Scarborough service being cut back to run between...
