Southern Trainee Drivers - Victoria & London Bridge

Is that what the job advert says? I'm not sure that's correct. One of the first parts of the trainee driver course for Southern is PTS, has been for years. If you're interested in the vacancy, it might be worth querying with Southern.

    Class 377/6 - more info

That question remains unanswered despite being asked many times, from what I've heard.

    Class 377/6 - more info

Do you mean the twisty one rather than the push-pull type? Pretty much every 377 in service (on Southern at least) has had the push-pull ones replaced with the twisty ones as the push-pull ones had a tendency to come off in your hand when resetting the DRA. In fact I can't remember the last time...

    Drivers Swapping Shifts

If I was your driver manager (or whatever they're called this week at your TOC), I'd be taking your keys off you, arranging a psychiatric assessment and making you lie down in a darkened room.

What will replace the Class 456's on Southern?

    That doesn't explain Cheam though.

What will replace the Class 456's on Southern?

And Cheam going the other way, which has taken months and months. But not Ewell East. I think the platform lengthening at Box Hill was brought forward in the programme to allow longer trains to be run when all those people in clingy shorts were riding up and down the hill on pushbikes during...

Guards location for working on Southern 377's Vs SET 377's

10 bells. The guard is not actually closing the doors, he/she is just giving the 1-2 bell code to tell the driver to close the doors. Driver repeats 1-2 back and closes the doors, guard gives 2 when all doors are shut and the train is ready to leave, driver gives 2 back. And off we jolly well...

Guards location for working on Southern 377's Vs SET 377's

They are wired up on a 377, but can only be used in the active cab with an EP key on (and you can't have 2 keys on at once as I am sure you are aware). Which seems a bit daft really. There is a keyswitch for the signal bell which uses a T251 so when the train is too rammed for the conductor to...

Three Bridges signalling centre evacuated due to fire alarm

Three Bridges might not exactly be state of the art today, but it was modern when first commissioned and is a lot more sophisticated than just some old blokes pulling levers: it controls all train movements from Thornton Heath/Anerley south through Croydon/Gatwick/Haywards Heath down to...

Transpennine Express New Trainee Driver Vacancies

This is great stuff, it's always fun watching people getting upset on the internet for no real reason, carry on.

Porterbrook sign £40m deal for class 455 upgrade.

456s already accelerate pretty well in weak field (although shunt/series/parallel can be painfully slow), probably better than a 455, although the rate of acceleration for both classes drops off past around 40mph. As they are at present, 456s have had a modification (a software mod as far as I'm...

Semaphore signals and colour light signals.

It's been used for just that purpose - at Cheam when the automatic signals were converted to controlled a month or so back. I shall keep an eye out when going that way to see if the plates get changed before the tape falls off.

Semaphore signals and colour light signals.

The Rule Book was amended recently (see page 38 of Issue 16 of the Amendments Module) such that drivers can no longer pass automatic or semi-automatic signals under their own authority. The change was introduced because it rarely happened, largely because (as you say) CSR/GSM-R/mobile phone...

    Wallington Line

Those mid afternoon services only stop for a change of driver - all Uckfields are crewed by Link 1/2 Norwood drivers and conductors from Selhurst. But they're not public stops, advertised or otherwise.

    Mainline Drivers' Role

It will vary from TOC to TOC, depot to depot, link to link and from day to day. But for me: Yes, we do checks, either very basic ones when setting up the cab just before a journey (radio, brake test etc.), or more in depth checks when doing preps/part preps on units depending on where they...

Which Class 170 route includes a longish tunnel?

Well you say that but every time I get the Eurostar, when it comes out of the tunnel, I find we've miraculously travelled in time forward an hour! Explain THAT!
