I believe the area got its name due to all of the canals and basins that were there serving the local industries in the 1800's.

That would make sense in that case. So why do stations such as Bham New St have them? Sheer numbers of people?

Are yellow lines compulsory for platforms? My local station doesn't have them.

Sandwell and Dudley. Sandwell is the name of the local authority which nobody has heard of and the station isn't in Dudley either.

I travel on LM every day on the Chase line and rarely if ever have my pass looked at. But it is peak and usually full to bursting. In 4 yrs of doing this i have never had a service cancelled due to staff shortage. Short formation on the other hand is another matter entirely.

As some have mentioned Coventry station is grotty (seeing it every weekday is rather depressing) but the outside is unrecognisable from 12 months ago thanks to the 'Friargate' project. Saying that Virgin have been revamping the station itself lately. New ticket office etc.

I think this the lady who also pronounces 'Birmingham International' as "birkernational'. At least thats what it sounds like.

Least favourite on-board announcer would be a train manager on Virgin trains between Euston and Brum. He has a Potteries accent i think, but takes great pleasure in announcing Bham Int and New St as "Buuuuuuuuurmingham" and ends every announcement with a prolonged "Thank yoooouuuuu". Very annoying.

Yes. They can be a sensitive bunch. One day i plonked myself down in a seat on a New St - Rugeley service which was half empty. I didn't see that the previous service was still at New St 'delayed'. That service was subsequently cancelled so they all piled on the train i was sat in. I ended up...

I feared as much. I foresee much disgruntlement from those who have to go from Rugeley to Birmingham every day if they don't have their tables and pull downs for the laptops/ipads.

If i stand 'behind' the yellow line but then turn and face the other way, am i still behind it, or in front?

The coal yard lingered on until the mid 1980's IIRC. I remember walking past it. I would think the last working would have been during 1978 as those Flickr photos show Bilport Lane bridge demolished as of 1979/80.
