Completely agree. I think that some people eat on trains due to boredom and to pass the time. We just seem to live in an all day snacking society nowadays.
I always thought that the drinking on the ferry on the way over was part of the experience. Perhaps it was a older generation thing that younger people did not carry on with.

I would not worry about the dispatch staff; just jump on, they are not going to chase after you to drag you off but the ticket inspector might see things differently.
At a guess; it may have been due to TV scheduling. Amazon had the right to cover the Liverpool v Real Madrid on Tuesday night and could not re-schedule to the Wednesday.
The rugby at Everton will have been planned many months in advance. Liverpool's evening match with Aston Villa could not be moved to the Sunday as they had a champions league fixture on Tuesday evening.
