Speed limits and making up time

Back in the day you are refering to there was no automatic speed control. If a class 47 driver (95mph max) wanted to do 115mph there was nothing to stop him. When HSTs came in 1976 I clocked them well above 125mph between Didcot and Reading (137mph). Speed limiters set to 128mph came later...

Will it really arc in this situation?

Sorry, what are you on about? By the way, in this context no is spelt know.

Speed limits and making up time

I have no reason to doubt you but to add to my post above when travelling along the flat between Severn Tunnel Junction and Newport at 70mph and a bit over the controller was left at maximum and the engines never cut out. I find it hard to believe that a late 1950s DMU would have the technology...

Mods, can we put this to bed. All of us know the guy was a complete **** and should be dealt with. All the posts about distances from OHLE and height above platform and rungs on ladder are irrelivant.

Speed limits and making up time

Never knew that. Many a trip from Bristol to Cardiff sat behind the driver the speedometer needle sat squarely on the 70mph mark.

Can Lewisham Vale Jct be improved?

No. Parks Bridge is the next one towards Hither Green and is 40mph. Lewisham Vale is just after you pass under the Nunhead line on the Lewisham avoiding line . It is 15mph because it all has to fit between two road underbridges.

Virgin hires thirty former prison inmates for revenue staff

I believe in days gone by that some of the carriage cleaners at Ashford were actual inmates from the prison (open?) at Aldington. There was a piece in the local paper about it. Again a rehabilitation exercise at the end of sentence. Not sure if this was pre or post privatisation.

Season Ticket - should I be able to get off early?

Thanks. Must look to see if I can get a SOUTHERN ONLY from Ashford. Would be a hell of a long trip via Hastings and Eastbourne. Think i'll stick to my PLUS HIGH SPEED travelcard.:)

Season Ticket - should I be able to get off early?

Genuine question. Is there such a beast as a SOUTHERN ONLY travelcard?

    Pantograph noises on class 379

Loudest i've heard is a 395. Quite a bang if you are under the pantograph.

    Bi-mode class 377s

As the train only stops for a few minutes not a lot of charging will get done.

Proposed new SWT services for Yeovil, including Pen Mill via Westbury/Frome

Apologies. You are right. Just checked the GWR timetable. Just to say the trains never seem to treat the stations as request stops.

    Bi-mode class 377s

With the current timetable no units stayover at Ashford. There is a short turnaround before the unit returns to Brighton. How would going to the sidings for a recharge work? At least 1 extra unit if not 2. In the thumper days a unit used to go to Chart Leacon depot for a refuel around midday.

Proposed new SWT services for Yeovil, including Pen Mill via Westbury/Frome

I thought they stopped being request stops a while back. Every train (GWR) i've used over the last 2 years has automatically stopped at these stations.

    Triple Headed Services

Long gone now but in the past the South Wales iron ore trains were hauled by 3 class 37s. (all working).

Passengers locked on TPE train at Warrington Central (12/08)

Because the police declared it a crime scene. I think it was normal police as well as BTP. There was quite an uproar in the press at the time.

Passengers locked on TPE train at Warrington Central (12/08)

Remember it well. I believe the driver was questioned at length when all he had done was apply the brake. The passengers were asked "did you see what happened?".
